    Default California Skateboarding Laws

Wouldn't it be cool if someone actually made a webpage that compiled all the laws regarding skateboarding in and around Los Angeles?

Why doesn't anyone take the time to do that?!

    (sigh)

Sheesh. I have to do everything around here!

    Skateboard Laws

I created a downloadable PDF on that page too. You can print it into a double-sided tri-fold-pamphlet.

    Enjoy! 8)

    15.08.185: SKATEBOARD.
"Skateboard" means any board or any other object or device which has wheels attached to it by any means whatsoever and which is propelled by pushing, pulling, or gravitational forces, and to which there is not affixed any device or mechanism for steering. (Ord. 12259 § 1, 1980: Ord. 6544 Ch. 1 Art. 2 § 1222, 1954.)

    LOS ANGELES COUNTY CODE
    TITLE 15: VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC
CHAPTER 15.54: SKATEBOARDS AND ROLLER SKATES

15.54.010: SKATEBOARDS - PROHIBITED ON GREATER THAN THREE-PERCENT GRADE.
No person shall ride on or propel any skateboard, as defined in Section 15.08.185, on any county road, street, highway, lane or alley which has a grade in excess of three percent, nor shall any person ride on or propel any skateboard on any county road, street, highway, lane or alley in excess of 10 miles per hour. (Ord. 12259 § 2, 1980: Ord. 6544 Ch. 1 Art. 4 § 1404.1, 1954.)

While i was researching it turns out it different from city to city.
Most of these laws were designed to prevent children from playing in the streets.
    awesomeness i applaud!!!

Awesome! That is very cool. Great job. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one taking the time to do such a thing.

I was considering including San Diego, but I decided to be selfish and keep it to the towns I usually ride in. After all, I couldn't exactly include very single city in California. I had to draw the line somewhere. I hoped it would simply inspire folks to look up the Municipal Codes and County Codes in their own areas.

P.S. I just noticed we named our pages exactly the same filename. Now THAT is weird.

We always called this the "Roger Hickey Law". It was written specifically to stop skateboarding on Glendora Mountain Road (GMR) in 1980. I remember getting busted skating on GMR in 1979 and the sheriff's couldn't figure out what to cite us with. Eventually they wrote us a ticket for "Pedestrian in roadway (skateboarding)". Since I was only 14 at the time I had to go to court with my dad and the judge thretened me with all sorts of things. It put an end to my skating on GMR for awhile...

I was thinking about it the other day and after finding this thread, decided to post up what my city says:

    Santa Maria Municipal Code:
Section 7-7.03. Roller skates, skateboards and toy vehicles.
    (a) Pursuant to the authority of the California Vehicle Code, it is unlawful for any person on roller skates or riding in or by means of any coaster, skateboard, toy vehicle or similar device to go on any roadway, public sidewalk serving a business or business district, or public parking facilities, or any private parking facilities within the City to which this title applies by reason of the provisions of Section 7-1.07 of this title.
    (b) It is unlawful for any person on roller skates or riding in or by means of any coaster, skateboard, toy vehicle or similar device to go on any privately owned sidewalk or pedestrian walkway that is generally held open for public use to serve a facility which serves the public including, but not limited to, shopping centers, professional offices, public buildings, malls, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels, motels, retail stores and offices, if properly posted.
Pursuant to police power authority, it is unlawful for any person on roller skates or riding by means of any coaster, skateboard, toy vehicle or similar device to go upon public property, if properly posted.
It is unlawful for any person to ride on a skateboard in a skateboard park or a skateboard park with temporary ramps unless that person is wearing a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. It is also unlawful for any person to ride on in-line skates in a skateboard park or a skateboard park with temporary ramps unless that person is wearing a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads.
    (c) To be properly posted as required by subsection (b) of this section, the property must have signs at each entrance, conspicuously posted, and clearly visible, and other signs necessary to provide notice which read substantially as follows:

“ROLLER SKATES, SKATEBOARDS AND OTHER SIMILAR VEHICLES PROHIBITED.
    S.M.M.C. SECTION 7-7.03”

    (Ord. 88-9 § 1, eff. 6/21/88: prior Code § 16-35, Ord. 2002-16, eff. 12/6/02, Ord. 2003-10, eff. 5/20/03

After reading it, it seems to say "Hey, don't ride a skateboard in the city, k?"

    Laws are tricky.

    Read it carefully.

What is actually says is - you can't skate in a business district or a parking garage (paragraph a).

Every other location where skating is forbidden has the caveat "if properly posted" - meaning there has to be a "no skateboarding" sign. Read paragraph (c) again.

So, it's not as restrictive as it sounds.

*nods* I did realize that and promptly drove around all the big parking lots in town looking for the required signs. Their lack of signs is my green light.
