So, Calgary reportedly had rain on Friday, perfect to rinse off the course for a sunny day, today. With a large speedboard class and full grid of streetluge all running today, they're busy on the hill. The streetluge division includes Sean Mallard, RJ Meehan, John Rogers, Chris McBride, Chris Chaput and more. The lugers that are also racing DH get only one practice run for each class, giving the multi-discipline racers another reason to prove they're at the top of their game to run all day with less practice than their single-division competitors.
The speedboard class is huge: the Landy, Rayne and Kebbek teams are out, including Tom Edstrand, K-Rimes, Ian Comishin, JimZ and I'm not sure about Graham Buksa. Jimmy Flindt, Danny Connor, Noah Sakamoto, John Rogers, Chris Chaput, Ed Catipon, Andrew Mercado, Cliff Coleman and others represent the California crowd up to show the Canadians some speed, but Scoot, Brian from Chilliwack & Mike Benda might have a few ideas about that. Erik Lundberg, the blonde bomber from Europe is on the course and looking fast, according to bystanders, too.
The course surface is reported to be clean, but for a few rough sections, two mellow speedbumps (one with a nasty cut in it that racers avoid) and one significant crack in the middle of a turn. A few skaters have been tossed, but there's a good line over it that others are rolling.
The Qualifying sounds like a Jody Wilcox special: heats of 8 racers, chosen either by when they signed up or how Wilcox decides to place them, line up side by side and "race to qualify". The finishing order of the first run decides who gets the inside line positions to start on a second run of the same 8, and the finishing order there sets eliminations into a group of 4 "A" and 4 "B" for the racing. So, here's hoping you didn't sign up alongside Edstrand, Lundberg and Sakamoto!! Either way, it looks like a format designed to ensure everyone gets at least three runs down the hill in race format.
That's all we've got so far. If you get news or pics, post'em!

--The "crack" I mentioned earlier was the undoing of many, including Mischo Erban.
--Zen and Noah took each other into the hay, precluding them from the finals, but into the consi.
--Brunson took the inside line to overtake Chaput, pushed him into the hay and held on for fourth in his heat.
--K-Rimes and Kyle were fast all day.
--The speedboard final was a fast, tight pack. Niko got into the first corner first, and was able to hang out front all the way, but the other three were tight on him.
--Rogers had the good line and speed on the streetluge. Several of the races were a battle to follow John.
--Plenty of spills, no significant injuries, everyone goes home grinning.
