Default Someone explain how sponsors work please.

We have an event in Michigan coming up, madness in the mitten https://www.facebook.com/event.php?e...3708972&ref=mf, and there's a skate shop in Flint that I buy all my hardware and such from and so do a lot of locals.

How do you go about approaching someone about asking if they want to be a sponsor for an event. I mostly just don't understand what is in it for the company. "Hey um we got a race and if you give us free stuff we only put down your name. Sound good?"

Not worth taking the 10 seconds to put your helmet on?

The point of sponsorships from the companies side is to have someone of good standing [such as a guy they know is a good person/rider] to put their company name out there. This gives the company exposure and hopefully, more business.

You approach the business or company with your idea, complete details, event flier and expected turnout and need prize donations, also if your collecting fees what are doing with them, covering expenses, donating them. If your soliciting in person, present yourself like you were applying for a job,ask for the owner or manager. FYI; a lot of local business shy away from outlaw events

This is the NUMBER ONE thing that many, many event promoters don't get and kudos to you for thinking about it. Sure, there are those of us that support events for stoke, but there are limits to pure charity for everyone. It boils down to, "what are you going to do for the sponsor" in exchange for services, support, cash and/or gear?" If what you have to offer makes good sense to the sponsor, the theory is you're good to go.

So, what can and should you offer?
---How about exposure? Will there be people at the event who are likely to BUY something from the sponsor later (as opposed to racers that already have gear/sponsor and only want free stuff) ? Will there be spectators? How many?
--Can the sponsor show up and sell things? Can the sponsor show up and give the awards from the podium?
--What are you doing to promote the event in advance? How many people will your efforts reach? Are those people potential customers for your sponsor? (Voters count as customers, btw).
--What are you going to do to promote the sponsors at the event? What does the sponsor need to provide and what do you think that might cost them?
--What are you going to do to promote the event after it takes place? Will you ensure the hardest part of all events happens? (This is the post-event results, coverage article in magazines or internet and photos to go with, all in a timely manner.) Will you ensure the sponsors' logos are in the background of photos you use in your articles, and that you give them credit?
--Is the event one that will make the sponsor look good?
--Can the sponsor get the same exposure you offer by just showing up with a Team Tent or Team Truck or bro-skaters that take the spotlight without supporting the event? What will you do to ensure the sponsors who support you with "sweat or treasure" will be better off than those that just show up with a pile of stickers?
    ---Et Cetera.

Take it from me: I've put on events or worked for events where I ask for sponsorship and I get asked for sponsorship. Seen it from both sides. Once you get past the initial gloss of things, the promoters' job is to ensure sponsors perceive a benefit...whether that be merely camaraderie and stoke or market presence is gonna depend on the situation.

The bolded section is incredibly important. Companies don't want to send product out into the abyss, never to be heard from again. They want to see event coverage and publicity in exchange for their free stuff.

    Numbers. People like/want numbers.

Your logo will be featured on 100 event t-shirts.
Your logo will be featured on our event's Facebook page that has 1000 members.
Your logo will be featured on 250 print flyers.
Your logo will be tattoo'd on 20 drunken frat girls/guys.

Good info, it all makes sense to me.

I wasn't honestly too concerned with trying to get some other sponsors I just know I need some new gear and figured I might as well try to hand out a flyer to the shop and just do some talking with the owner and maybe talk her into it. Plus she's a hottie so an excuse to talk to her .

Do you watch TV? You see those commercials? Watch a sporting event, do you see all the logos for various companies?

Well its all advertisement. Which in some way is what sponsorship is all about. You get some product or money and the company gets their name out there.

BUT for a grass roots effort, for small local companies it is actually a little more than JUST advertisement. Supporting local events help grow the community. A larger community needs more product, and where do they get that product?

This scares me. Please e-mail me some info about yourself before representing our event. Lying to sponsors to get gear for an event that you are not an organizer for and then keeping it is not cool... and you will be very unwelcome at the event, a group of people that I have never seen turn a cold shoulder to anyone... people who are kind, caring, and just looking to have a good time. Don't ruin it for the rest of us. We showcase the sponsors gear, take pictures, raffle it off, list them as sponsors in the video, and pay them the respect they are owed. I apologize if I am misinterepreting your post.

i've had a couple of small companies and shops sponsor me in the past for other outdoor sports- little bit of kit here and there, generous personal and team discounts, loan of vehicles, and so on- one thing i most definitely did was take them seriously.

its their money and time thats invested in you, whether its 5$ worth of teeshirt or a 100k winnebago for the weekend.

i for one made sure i was on as many photos as possible with the kit, logos, all my friends kit stickered up and so on, presenting the sponsors to an advantage- if anyone showed interest, i did some quick sales-repping, looked after kid groups. i went well out of my way to help promote my sponsors- you have to want to support them too.

the OP seems to be looking just to score a deal or two-> good luck with that, but this looks to be a small community- if you piss people around, you're looking, as the last poster said- at some cold shoulders.

    Make a poster
    go in to the shop
find the manager, tell him your putting together a race and your gonna have alot of people attending, then ask if he wants to sponsor the event by donating some SHWAGGG, i dont think hed say no, then if he agrees put the company logo on the poster

I know that I buy tshirts from outlaws and events, and I'm more prone to buy things longboarding related if I'm super stoked and in the mood. In a way it's like having sex with a hot girl. If I'm super excited for it, I'm going to try to get everything I can to remember it by and I'll do anything to feel like that again.

Sponsoring an event is also seen as a sign of strength within the industry. If a company is sponsoring an event, they are trying to position themselves as a leading company that is making quality products or services.

If I were you approaching a store, I would coordinate with the store and hand out 15% or 20% off discount cards at the event, and hopefully will drive more traffic into the store. A customer might end up buying more than what they were originally intending on.

always put the logo of the sponsor you want before you show them the poster.
