There was an unusual sight on Lookout Mountain this weekend. Skateboarders from all over the country raced down the mountain.
The Buffalo Bill Downhill event was Colorado's first-ever sanctioned downhill skateboard race.
Police closed the road to traffic for safety reasons.
Racers reached speeds of more than 40 mph -- and there was a lot of crashing involved, but special clothing protects the riders from getting road rash.
One competitor told CBS4 that everyone on the course over the weekend became fast friends if they weren't already.
"Even the guys you don't know, you introduce yourself and it's instant. There's a lot of brotherhood -- a lot of camraderie. It's awesome," he said.
The Web site for the event described it in the following way:
"This is Downhill Skateboarding, an exciting sport that involves specialized 'longboards' that are designed to race down steep and curvy racecourses.
"This sport is practiced all over the world and has found a place right here in Colorado. Races consist of closed sections of mountain roads, with haybales and safety fencing for protection. Four to six skateboarders at a time will race the course jockeying for first place."
