June 21st weekend in DC

On Go Skateboarding Weekend, East Coast Board Co. will be hosting a longboarding event in Rock Creek Park in Washington DC.

The main event will take place on Sherrill Dr. Sherrill is closed to cars on the weekends and will be open for us. This morning, Brian, Doug (shop owner), and I went out to the run to check on a few things. On our trip out there, we ran into the park police. After talking with them for a bit, they made it clear that longboarding was welcome on the roads (limits on trick skating and resulting vandalism.)

There will be a "DH 101" event taking place on Aspen Rd. beginning at 12:00 on Saturday June 20th. That part of the event will run until 3:00. As of now we plan to cover footbraking, progressively handling higher speeds, etc. Things will be broken up to cater to the people who come out to skate. At 3:00, racing will begin. As of now, the plan is to hold heats of 4 people but plans will be adapted to the showing of riders.

Helmets and slide gloves are mandatory for racing. Helmets, slide gloves, and knee pads are required for the DH intro section.

As a note, this is NOT a sanctioned event under East Coast Board Co. Everyone who wants to come out and ride is riding under their own liability. A waiver is being drafted up. There will be prizes for the race.

I'll be missing this one. I'm traveling to Olney for the Bowl gig on Saturday so the kids can compete. Not doing it 2 days in a row.

Darn, that's 4 days before I get back. Oh well, I guess you can't change the date of go skateboarding day. Have fun everyone!

EDIT:: I need to know which day it is, the 20th or the 21st, in order to get off work in time. Can anyone clear that up?

i'm actually off friday and saturday. it would be another six hour drive though. you guys are testing my dedcation

This event is JUNE 20TH on SHERRILL DR in Rock Creek Park beginning at 12pm and running until dark or a time to be determined at the event.

To find the road online, look for the intersection of 16th St Nw and Sherrill Dr in Washington DC, area code is 20012. The road we are using is across from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. As you can see in the maps online, there is a bridge over the water. The race course will be ending before the bridge (which you can ride on with little to no problem).

This entire section is closed to traffic on weekends.

Alright, I have a family thing to go to that day so I doubt I'll make it. But the next day I might check it out seeinas the road is closed on weekends. Is Sherrill dr. the only good hill? I was lookin at google earth and Ridge Rd. looks a good bit longer

Sherril is a closed road to traffic on the weekends so we can ride on it without causing any problems and only worrying about other riders hurting themselves or each other. I'd really like to know whether this is for saturday or sunday because the 21st is Go Skateboarding Day not the 20th and the title and what justin posted are two separate things...

The actual downhill part of Ridge Rd. isn't longer than Sherill. Also the pavement is close to unrideable and it isn't closed on weekends. Though, it does have a gate that closes it at random times (just holidays I think?) and the hairpin at the top is pretty fun.

Sorry for the confusion, this is being held on JUNE 20th. Go Skateboarding Day is on Father's Day so the shop decided that celebrating on the 20th would result in a better turn out.

I have work all afternoon but not on fathers day/go skateboarding day...looks like you'll have to have the event without me unless I can switch with someone real quick...
