Epic International Skate Fest - Mishawaka, IN - Sept. 26, 2009
Hey Everybody,
Don't have a flyer put together yet but it's coming soon and most of everything else is lined up, so I decided to go ahead and publicize the event we've got planned for September 26, 2009. Here's the deal:
Epic International Skate Fest
Location: Bethel College, 1001 Bethel Circle, Mishawaka, IN 46545 (google maps doesn't recognize this, enter 1001 W McKinley to get directions. The entrance is actually around the corner, off of Logan St. If you need help with directions, PM me.)
Date: September 26, 2009
Time: Registration from 8-9am, racing starts immediately thereafter.
Entry Fee: $25, payable day of the race, covers entry into all events
Waiver: you or your parents {if under 18} will need to sign one, but it's not prepared yet. It will be posted up here about a month in advance.
Events:
Downhill Slide: There will be two slide contests. The first will either be a longest slide contest or a most rotations contest, whichever y'all would rather do. The second will be a "coolest tech slide" contest, as determined by the crowd and other competitors. It's all in fun, but the winner in each contest will receive an Earthwing Drifter deck. Get practicing, folks!
Longskate Freestyle: Each participant will have a short amount of time (tentatively set at 30-45 seconds) to show off their sickest, smoothest string of longskate freestyle moves. It's time to bust out the cross-steps, hang 10s, cartwheels, and skydives... and whatever else your gnarly little mind can dream up! Prize will be announced in the future.
Slalom: This will be the main discipline for the day, and we'll be running two formats of racing - a long-format Hybrid Slalomcross as well as a straight-ahead 50 cone Tight Slalom course. The slalomcross race will be fairly long and will include some brief sections without cones so that racers can pump up the speed a bit. In the Am/Open class there will be sections where pushing is allowed so that racers who can't pump as well can still maintain speed. I haven't laid out the course exactly yet, but I think we're looking at 150-200 cones for the Pro class, somewhat less for the Am/Open class. The TS course will be on a slight downhill with only a bit of curve to the course. 50 pretty cones all in a row and we'll see how many we can avoid knocking down We'll run two classes for the TS as well as long as there is sufficient interest, however we may need to run it as a single Open class.
I have applied for ISSA sanctioning for the slalom portion of the day - we are currently seeking PRIME status. I'll update you as soon as I know the outcome.
Prizes for the Slalom will be Cash for Pro class and gear for Am/Open. There may be a bit of gear added for the Pros or a little money thrown in with the Am/Open, but we'll see about that when we get a bit closer to the event.
Housing:
This race is starting pretty early in the morning to avoid conflict with other events in the evening, so if you'd like to come the night before I'll find you a place to sleep. It's a college campus so there are plenty of spare couches, we'll work it out. Same deal if you need to stay the night after the race.
Other Stuff:
I'm working on securing free pizza for all racers, so hopefully we can hook that up. If it doesn't work out or if you don't like pizza (!?), there are plenty of fast-food restaurants within walking distance, as well as a pretty good family dining-type restaurant.
Alcohol/Tobacco/Drug use is not permitted on campus. I apologize to all who dislike this policy, but it is the school's rule and not mine. If you need to smoke, the campus isn't all that big and you're welcome to step outside the gate and light up. Sorry for the inconvenience - again, not my rule.
For everyone who was at the Chicago Cone Crusher in Batavia this past March, you all did a fantastic job of cooperating with the host city, helping out where needed, having a good time and showing people what slalom is all about. Let's do it even better at this race.
There is a nice, new river walk that goes along the St. Joe river, about a mile south of campus. If there is time after the event and people want to, we could all cruise down and ride it. If there is interest and I can work out the food end of things, we could possibly do a picnic in the park type of thing - cruise down, munch on supper, ride along the river, cruise back. I think it would be a nice relaxing way to end the event.
Sorry for how monstrous this post has gotten - if you have any questions, ask them here!
I hope to see a ton of you at the race!
-Peter Metzger

INFO UPDATE:
Here's a deal for you: register now, save some dollars! All competitors registered on the NCDSA sign-up page by August 15, 2009 will have a reduced entry fee of $20 (includes those already registered). Assuming you'll have a go at all four events (tight, hybrid, slide, freestyle), that's only $5 per event!
I just heard back from Loaded/Orangatang today and they are tossing some great prizes our way, including a Loaded deck and a set of O-tang wheels... DELICIOUS!
Bring all your friends! The more people that enter, the more money you can win By the way, I'm not making any money off this (unless I miraculously win an event) - I'm paying the entry fee just like everybody else.
By the way, if you have a timing system or cones available for use, check out my plea for help on the ISSA website.
See you in the fall!
::edit::
The slalom portion of EISF2009 has been awarded ISSA sanctioning - PRIME status.

I'm going to try and come. Now promises. I might have to work that day. Band Season means lots of overtime hours for me. It sounds like a fun event.

Hey everyone,
just a friendly reminder: the last day for priority registration ($5 off) is TODAY! Register here:
NCDSA - Contest Registration
other info updates:
We've changed the slide contests to hard- and soft-wheel categories. Anything 90a or higher will be considered a hard wheel. Other than this, there are no limitations on wheels, trucks, or decks for the slide contests.
There are two board limitations on the longskate freestyle contest: Boards under 36" may have only one upturned end (kick), and wheels must be a minimum of 60mm. It's nothing against modern freestyle, but we're hoping to encourage innovation and feel that imposing these limitations will help to promote that kind of creativity.
We now have well over $1200 in cash and prizes (mainly prizes) to give away - not only as podium prizes, but also as door prizes for other competitors! Come out and see what you can win so far we've got stuff from Abec11, Gravity, Earthwing, LongBoardLarry, Loaded, Orangatang, Pleasure Tool bearings, and Concrete Wave. There is a good chance a few more companies will jump in before the event goes down, and I'll let you know as that happens.
It's going to be a great event even without the prizes, but thanks to these fine companies it will be even better! Come on out and have a slice of the pie.*
See you in September!
Peter Metzger
*actual pie may not be present at the race. we'll see.

Hey Peter- will there be a starting ramp used? If so, can you post the dimensions? I'd like to build one to practice with since I've never been down one before. If need be, I could build one to be used for the race as well. Thanks!

We will use them if we can get them (which may be to say, if you build/bring them). There are plans floating around online, both for radiused and flat ramps. Either will work but the curved kind seem to be more popular. Check the ISSA website for more info about start ramps.
Basically, the courses will be fine without start ramps, but could be more fun with them. So if we have them, yay! If not, no biggie.
::edit::
If you do build a start ramp for us, make sure this won't happen

Hey Peter,
This sounds SICK!! I'm gunna try to make it out there somehow to be a part of it.
I was thinking, would there be any way to set up a hippie jump contest as well? I think that would be equally as fun as it would be entertaining to watch. Also to bring back some of the old school style contests to today : )
Just a thought!

Brilliant, sir. We'll see what we can do In keeping with the oldschool spirit, I think the winner should get a Humu. What do you think?

NCDSA changed their site around. It would have been nice of them to let event hosts know so they could update the sign-up link in advance, but this appears to be the correct link at this time: NCDSA - Contest Registration
I apologize for the inconvenience.
