Anyone up for a 50-miler practice run, let's meet up @ Noon, North of Fremont Bridge, October 6th. The goal here will be to GPS out a "perfect" 25-mile turnaround point in Redmond....
Looks like there's a dry window Friday, so I'm riding tomorrow from 145th and the Burke, over to Redmond and back -- 30 miles total. If anyone's down with that lemme know! Will plan to hit the trail at 3 p.m.
If its really dumping on Saturday we can try the GPS ride another time, unless you're hardcore and jonesin to ride rain or shine, I'll be game. Maybe just Fremont to Redmond, then halfway back (35 miles instead of 50) -- which is my backyard so I can drive you the rest of the way back to Fremont again. Laterz!!!
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
How did it go? If I lived closer I would love to do something like this! Maybe I'll be able to get out that way at some point... I tend to say that a lot though. I am, however, going out tomorrow morning to ride a string of trails in my area. 7 mile round trip to the lake and 2 miles around. With me will be a cycler and a roller derby girl. Hopefully she'll be able to keep up!

Curious to hear about that lake loop, and how well that derby girl kept up with you (or vice versa) We have some really tough chicks here from the Rat City Rollers, their season starts in spring so I've been dropping hints we should hit the trails for some winter training.
The mini-ride went well as far as research goes. The trail is looking...real interesting. There are a couple road detours where they've completely torn up the trail for repair (good for long term... not good for next week's ride!!) I rescheduled a number of weekends over the last month to try coordinating other people's commitments which is why its pushed into late October. And I don't think there is a "leafier" time of season for the trail, I ride it almost every day and some of the areas are now like sludge. So whats normally an hour commute is taking about 70-75 minutes, with the average speed down a bit and pushing more than pumping...so we'll see. Over 24 hours that adds up.
In any case, next weekend's ride is increasingly more of a training run, for a bigger, coordinated 24-hour event with Dave from Boardfree early next year. It might even mean a trip to Australia! Sky's the limit -- In fact, if your 2-mile lake loop works well for you at that same time, we could coordinate a start time and ride the 24-hour remotely and synched up! This was what a guy from Cali and I were planning before he earned himself a gnarly hipper.
Update to come end of next week when we see if the sun gods are smiling upon us.
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
eskimo, hope you find a ride!! if not, no worries -- next year's event will probably be 20 degrees warmer.
if weather holds up as nice as yesterday, it's looking good. here's the mileage "plan" broken down by time, all subject to change depending on the MOJO. i'll make big chalk marks on the sidewalk upon departing fremont and marymoor in case people are trying to drop in half way. greenlake will be the easiest hook up--
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
ill be at greenlake. itll be cold as hell and im talling you right now i wont enjoy it... but i do love me some greenlake laps.

Larry, you rock!! Thanks for ponying up such a bootylicious deck!!
I'm going to add to Larry's HUMU a few other items and will raffle this all together as one package:
-- Set of 62mm 78a Bennett wheels + stickers
-- Bennett 5.0" with Khiro white/orange bushings (and Bennett red urethane bushings)
-- a rear Tracker RTS to match
-- LBL HUMU
So for example if you donate $20 that's worth 2 raffle tickets. Donations for this raffle will count from today until the drawing Sunday night at 6 p.m. PST on the 28th (assuming I've woken up by then.) Need not be "present" to win but you gotta respond within 24 hours!

Yep, Sherpa, definately a 'chill' session at night-- looks like clear skies, high 30 temps, and moonlit trails, although there are a few sketchy places a light can come in handy. The main hangout will be the "G" stadium/watercraft area, from around 7 p.m. I highly recommend the night riding over the day course, as the day is going to be a pretty quick clip, if anyone wants you might want to ride a bike instead. That's what Jackhammer was going to do until COSS came up!
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
SF's own Sherpa takes the LBL / Bennett / Khiro booty!
NWlongboarding and CSA crews - thanks again for all the support. An awesome dry sunny day and cold foggy moonlit night in the NW, lot of friends and lots of miles out dodging the crazies rolling out on the trail from their Halloween parties.
Huge thanks to Gareth and Nathan Roe for clocking the overnight hours and to the sponsors for ponying up support once again.
Those who have given to the cause, have given more than I'd ever imagined. All the fundraising was from friends, family, and people I have only met briefly if ever. I am so stoked at the outpouring from everyone at the grassroots level. Sincere thanks! Cheers 'til the next ride--

Rockin' James! It was fun taking those 3am laps with you. It's so quiet at that time of night. Cold too! Special props are due to Gareth, who held down the camp all night and kept his good humor!
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
Amazing feat, James!
Just wondering: Do you ride your normal stance throughout the entire ride, or do you switch stance every now & then? I do five-milers (or so) a couple of times a week on my slalom board, and though I can do 'em fine, it gets a little asymmetrical, if you know what I mean. So are you strictly a one-stance guy, or do you "swing both ways?"

That's the volunteer spirit Cat!
JBH as for switching (stance) i did a lot of pushing mongo-switch, after my right leg blew out, felt like a tendon just behind the knee, about 1/3 of the way. Usually pain comes and goes in 5 mile stints then migrates somewhere else (foot, toe, arch, side, calf, etc), but this knee thing really persisted. I totally relate to the assym concept though, earlier this year a phys therapist was working on getting my right middle back development to catch up with the left. Getting better at pumping switch but usually do that when fresh. On this ride I was just fighting to keep a steady pace, so switched pumps only a little on the declines.
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
It's coming soon-- TWO ultraskates in two months--
May 3rd -- The man who conquered New Zealand - Sheldon Lessard is joining on a 24-hour blitz, following the same Seattle--Redmond plan as last year, we'll make the go no-go call Friday the 2nd depending on weather. Anyone else wanting to drop in Saturday evening at Greenlake, just stay there 15 minutes and you'll see one of us, have your board ready and jump in! And if you want to ride the Burke during the day, drop us a line ahead of time for meet-ups, map details, etc., there are detours in the trail to be aware of!
June 14th -- Start time 8 a.m. in Seattle will be 3 p.m. in the U.K. -- where Dave Cornthwaite and likely a huge tribe of boarders will synch with us for 24 hours of sweat, maybe tears, hopefully no blood -- it better not @#$#@#$ rain here!! But we'll do this one either way.
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
Update on May 3rd: Sheldon and I decided to keep the plan simple, we're bailing on the whole Burke-Sammamish trail business, and will stay at Greenlake all day, just like last year's.
The most up to date details are on the link in my sig, including the June 14th updates.
The wild card is weather, hopefully these storm systems will pass and it'll be dry majority of the time. We won't cancel unless its a soak-fest. And keeping with tradition, probably head to breakfast sunday morning after. So grab your board and drop in at the lake anytime from 8 am--8 am!!
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
Then there's Eric Lowell from Texas, who grabs a plane ticket last minute to join Sheldon and I on the May 3rd ride!!
We're stoked to have Eric on board and since he wants a bit of local scenery, and since there's currently only 3 of us doing the full 24-hours, that means we retain the right to change our minds up until the night of May 2nd
We're now going to do our first 50 miles on the Burke-Sammamish trail, and spend the rest of the ride on the Greenlake loop, from around 2 p.m. Saturday onward.
I'll be updating these links with some details from past ultras, and welcome your questions and input!

James, you're positively schizophrenic! You're like, were doing Sammamish! Naw, skip Sammamish! Who needs it. No wait, new rider joinging us so we gotta show off the scenery. Sammamish it is! Silly man.
Yeah, riding G-Lake ALL DAY would be pretty harsh. I'm exactly 4 minutes from Greenlake, so expect me and my little helpers to forgo the entire eastside leg, and arrive sometime after 2pm to mob the lake with you. And skate good because I have some new telephoto cameras and you know we'll be watching!
Also, if you want to unload that Evo, I've got cash bones.
Re: LIVESTRONG 24-hour Ultra Skate -- Seattle and beyond
Yep, no problem being flexible and a little schizo, especially when we've got an out of stater coming all the way up-- Eric was really looking forward to the Burke so the Burke it is!! Gonna be great to see you out at the lake again Ken!
Some new developments:
- Thank you David Solomon for another generous donation-- He'll be shreddin the orange Bennetts soon!
- Caught word Thursday that my sister in-law down in SoCal is now fighting breast cancer so I'm dedicating next week's ride to Kathy Peters. Dedicated last year's to my mother Phyllis and niece Trudy, both who were taken early in life. I seriously @#$@#$ hate cancer!
- Looks like the first 50 miles we've got Sheldon, Eric, Calin, and "Rain" off NWLB -- just hoping the weather holds now.
- First week of May, Seattle Times will be posting the outcome of next Sunday's ride, cumulative mileage and all, in a story that will also feature longboard commuting and some downhilling with the NWLB crew. Wish we had Shane with us for the 3rd but one can't argue with a week down at the Ditch Slap!
