Subject: ** City of Goldendale’s response to Vandalism Date: 10-09-2008 Author: John Ozman ** City of Goldendale’s response to Vandalism ** By John Ozman – Volcanic Promotions

Longbranch, WA. – John Ozman and Volcanic Promotions is very disappointed to announce that the City of Goldendale will not be supporting the Maryhill “Festival of Speed” in 2009, or in the future.
Following, is a letter from Mayor Arletta Parton from the City of Goldendale. This letter was received on Wednesday Sept 9, 2008. The letter was addressed to John Ozman, Marcus Rietema, Golden Event Planning (Lorraine Reynolds) and previous Mayor Mark Sigfrinius, Jim Allyn:
Sirs: THE FEW as you put it, left a very bad taste in the mouth of the Fair Board Committee, me and my staff, justifiably so after looking at all of the pictures furnished us by the Klickitat County Buildings and Grounds Department. The pictures are available at City Hall if you are interested. It is unfortunate that you were not privy to the damage; foul language spray painted on straw bales that was NOT their property against the company or individual who sponsored them; spray painting on fairgrounds property of all the restroom walls that now need to be repainted; replacement of a sink that was pulled away from the wall; a broken gate; a brick that was torn out of a corner wall; flour all over everywhere; empty beer containers; prophylactics laying on the ground; in the barn area a metal image of the animal that is housed there pulled and left hanging from one hook, many others missing. As of this writing the damages have not been counted up to give us a dollar amount, it will be large. Goldendale will survive and make it's own mark without vandals that come and take advantage of a small town and its people who went all out to welcome, entertain and feed them. As far as I am concerned these vandals are not welcome in Goldendale. Maybe Maryhill can afford all of the vandalism, we certainly cannot. Arletta Parton, Mayor City of Goldendale

Volcanic Promotions has worked very hard over the past 2 years to build an event that is up to IGSA World Championships level. Many if not all who attended have stated it was the best run event of the year and possible the best event to date for IGSA. Many are also saying it was the best time of their life.
Now we are in a situation, due to a few “Daggers”, the event as a whole has been put in jeopardy. It’s too bad for Madrid that they have sponsored this sort of image.

I personally had to work with the city for the past 8 months selling the event to them. I let them know what the event would bring to the town in terms of athletes, spectators and revenue. It was a tough road with them. I let them know that the athletes are a great bunch of people from around the world that love the sport and the road they would be racing on. The first thing the mayor and city council worried about was exactly what happened at the campground, a bunch of vandals that do not care for other person’s property. A bunch of disrespectful vagrants and many of you know who they are, running around tearing things up. The City finally gave in and paid for the camping so it would be free to all athletes. They also paid for the spectator shuttle for Saturday and Sunday. They also woke up every morning at 400am to feed athletes breakfast everyday. These are residents that love their town and were so happy to meet all of you from around the world. Now they have a very bad taste in their mouth due to a few. They have been disrespected and #### on in their own house. Don’t be surprised if the Maryhill Museum gets pressure from Goldendale to not allow us to come back. Why would Maryhill want a bunch of disrespectful “Skaters” coming to town? “Skaters already don’t care about the rules to the Loops road as it is”. Trust me when I say this, Maryhill does not need this event to stay a float. They do not need the negative publicity either. They can also be very tough when it comes to not allowing skaters on the road.

I am very sad to say I am contemplating not doing the event again. Maybe the Festival of Speed should end at this point. Why should I put my job on the line, because I spend a lot of time planning for FOS, so a bunch of vagrants can trash on what I have done. It’s not worth it. If “Outlaws Races” are what they want then so be it. The funny thing about this is, some that were involved had it very easy coming to the event, due to my good nature. If I do the event again, I am sure there will be several people not welcome back. I am not for banning people from something that I do, but I am completely pissed that the event was trashed on.
Reading people on the forums saying, “It should have been expected”, “That’s what skaters are all about”, “Quit your complaining about the trash”, this just make me sick. This is not what Longboarding is all about. Skaters can keep their “Punk” attitude. But Longboarders are different, they are about, freedom, friends, good times, love for riding open roads, not trashing things. It about what’s in their heart. I have been around events for many years and this is the first time I have seen this take place. I hope this is not the route that Longboarding is going to take. Longboarders are different and way above this.

Really, really sad.
I hope you all realize what a setback this is for the sport, and I'm sure anyone who wants to just go skate Maryhill will have a much tougher time, they want nothing to do with us anymore.

Whatever.

Thanks to those that did it, NOT.

Many skaters would love to participate in 2009 and now that opportunity is possibly ruined.
