Re: 2009 East Coast Outlaw Downhill Series
I was talking with Susie about this on the way home from Clearfield, and I'm just gonna throw in here the ideas that were discussed in the car.
Maybe they're not all good, but ideas are ideas. Refinement is likely necessary.
A sanctioning body. East Coast Downhill Coalition or something along those lines. It would allow us to have a standard bracketing system, and points could be kept track of throughout the year. People who are holding races could opt to have their event be part of the body, or not. There would have to be benefits to including your race in the series - but that will have to come with time. Also, a sanctioning body would allow for organizers who are trying to close roads to have a name backing them. I know there's Dr. No, GSI (still? maybe?), Street-Missile (Quebec) and IGSA (Cali + the rest of the globe), but none of those bodies held races on the east coast of the US this year. And there have been MANY - some have been sanctioned through Board Shops but having a group of riders and racers establishing the rules keeps an even format and would get the East more respect when trying to deal with getting roads closed.
Fundraising. This is something we could all do individually, with the option to a) have it benefit our selves personally (i.e. money to travel for races) or b) have it benefit the east coast as a whole (spend it on haybails, closing roads, etc - a better idea). With enough fundraising, more races could waive an entrance fee, or be possible. Also, with (even the image of a sanctioning body) fundraising becomes a lot easier.
I know a lot of what I said involves $$, which = banks, which = making things governmentally official (IGSA is run like a business, dunno 'bout Dr. No), but like I said these are just thoughts.
The east coast held a lot of sick events this year with more on the way, and looking forward is the best way to keep this wonderful momentum rolling. 2008 saw Sultans, Munnsville, and some Canadian races. 2009 brought LOTS more and it all came from brainstorming, so let's keep it up!
I know I had more to type here... Maybe it'll find its way to my fingers sooner or later.

I was thinking of trying to throw one in late this year but now I'm thinking that if we're serious about organizing and going legit I should save it for next year.
There's a good possibility of a weekend in harrisburg to get this organization ball rolling though. My opinion is that it would be easier to do if we were all sitting together and figuring things out over a beer and burger........I volunteer my place.
We need to make a new thread too to update the year and remove the word Outlaw.

Re: 2009 East Coast Outlaw Downhill Series
Hey guys, I love what I've read here. I think if we can get an event in the north east, mass nh vt or maine it would attract a ton of people. I agree with getting an east coast organization going and I would love to be part of that. Anyone who has any further thoughts on that let me know and I will keep you guys informed if I think of anything as well.

rob riding the luge in clearfield this weekend was great i wish i had more cash laying around cause i'd buy one. maybe with the tax refund next year. in the mean time i gotta make a buttboard.

And I wanna see some laydown racing in 2010! I think Hayden and I are taking the initiative to make buttboard/luge a more youth-oriented sport than it currently is. And the first major step to that is getting people to race on buttboards. Why? because why not, unless you have something against it.. and that sounds like a personal problem to me.
Dean and Ray I'm amazed and stoked at what you guys are pouring into the East Coast scene... nothin' but good can come from this. know that its appreciated.
Same goes to all the race organizers of the past season.
I can't ride for sh!t so I may as well administrate.......
actually all of the flow from Ray and I come from a history of vert skating in the 80's. We remember what it was like to travel on no budget, live on canned tuna with no bread, cold spaghetti O's, and sleeping in closets. On top of that we love the sport of skateboarding. It's a vital part of our lives and this new genre of Downhill and all you guys have us STOKED!!! This is how we give back. So in reality I should be thanking all of you!!

I gotta say... luges are great, and racing on them sure is fun, but after hauling mine and hayden's around the east coast multiple times, I'm gonna build a few buttboards and leave the luge at home for sanctioned luge races and luge freerides. if there were more luge pilots on the east coast, like there are in california, it'd be more worth it to bring around.
but as it is the scene is tiny over here. plus, if you're good with a buttboard, luging will be easy peasy.
I figure if I show up at a race with 4 buttboards, I'll be able to find enough people for a heat, and i'll let it grow from there. after all they're just pieces of cut-down plywood on RII's and 70mm wheels...
But I'll stop with the luge talk, if you have any questions sean PM me, and I'll let this thread get on with its intent.

yeah seriously
dean and i bicker a bit...and he usually gets the best of me, but we are truthfully grateful for what u guys have done for our stoke. This has been a great season for riding and meeting new people. U guys have been a big part of giving me/us the stoke of skating again. I love this stuff and will support whatever happens and absolutely believe this is gonna blow up big.
I personally love outlaw races, they are so completely punk rock....but anthony i agree with you. believe me i lost sleep worrying about some of these kids (minors) getting hurt at our race and me having to call their parents, plus i have a lot to loose (as do we all).
All good in the hood

I talked to Sean about coming up for a day or whatever to check it out before we concrete anything. Dean or Keith, if you guys want to come down as well, try to get in touch with him and figure out a date. This hill is incredibly fun. I have spent 10 or so hours on it in the past three days, and I'm going again tomorrow for a few runs.

I might be able to do that but I'm casted until the 8th of July and not in shape for a couple weeks after that so I'm not going for it anyhow. I'll take your word for it. A mellow race sounds fun!!
and Sean, that kitchen was to be done before the race!!! get on it!!!

We also need to push and try and get some more roads closed for real. Honestly I could have kept track of points and all but we usually only did the top 8 and with no qualifying it'd be hard to settle the rest of the positions. The year isn't over and I'd like to see an event every month for the rest of the year be it a race or just a good free ride. Let's keep the stoke machine going. I'm trying to do what I can are you?
Hey Anthony,
. We are driving to Paskapoo end of July and we will be in New York( Long Island) first week in Aug. so get a race scheduled between August 4th -12th !!!! We'll show up.

Re: 2009 East Coast Legitimate Downhill Series
I like the idea of forming an association- like the Eastern Downhill Skateboarding Association. We could elect officers and sanction events. Possible positions could include, president, treasurer, public liaison, promotions. It would be nice to have rankings for heat seedings too.
I would pay a fee for yearly membership. With funds from membership fees, the association could buy stuff like walkie-talkies, bullhorns, tournament bracket boards, a website, insurance,......

Re: 2009 East Coast Outlaw Downhill Series
You guys are overlooking something important: With a legit organization you can't have any contact between that and the illegitimate outlaw races that are happening. You can't mix the two and if you do then legal action will be taken against the sanctioning body. I am positive that none of us have the means to deal with something like that. Lawyers, frivolous lawsuits and insurance companies have absolutely raped our country of any sense of personal responsibility which is the reason for skateboarding being outlawed and shunned. I agree with a need of organization and someone to give direction but we need to take it step by step. Also streetmissile already had races this year and we should look for more. The next one that happens we should get a caravan going to Montreal if we can. Anyway, I will get a website up in the near future and that will help a lot of this go smoother and get us away from silverfish which I see as a huge advantage to building our scene as the community it is and should be.
Mark, I was trying to plan an outlaw/freeride for the beginning of august and I will set a date later today.

Good points Anthony. Ev, I think Anthony is planning on buying the domain name and someone is just going to write up a forum type thing. We could also use invisionfree forums, I used to work with those and admin them, they were free, I assume they're still around.

Re: 2009 East Coast Outlaw Downhill Series
You guys are trying to blow this up too big too fast. We need to loosely organize at first and try to plan schedule that works for everyone. Like Anthony said, baby steps......
First year we run a little series, try to get some roads closed, and sponsor backing for the series as a whole and not individual races. It saves a lot of legwork for those hosting races. For the most part it'll still be in the style of non legit but it's a start. We keep a points total and have a big blowout for the final race of the year. Hopefully that can be on a closed road with all the legit permissions etc.
If we could pull off one season successfully then we start thinking bigger and let it grow as it may or die as it does. I don't think anyone is looking to make some giant investment here but a little organization sure beats races lumped on top of each other and 2 groups picking the same weekends.
