NC Mountains DH/Free Ride Sessions

Hey everyone! Posting to announce the two free ride sessions going on this December in the NC Mountains! Several of us around the state have been planning on hitting it, and we've decided on two sessions! Two sessions to accommodate more people during the busy time of the year and because I want to do it twice! Also, this is good practice for anyone going to Sultans of Speed.

Good news everyone! My friend is allowing us to use his mountain house to crash on Saturday night as well as Friday night for those who are traveling some distance or would just like to be there and get a good nights sleep. Let me know if you will be driving up on Friday and need a place to crash both nights! The house will sleep 12 people and has plenty more room for sleeping bags if we need it. You will need to bring your own pillow/sheet/blanket/towel
/toothbrush/SKATEBOARD (thanks Chris)/and whatever else you'll need! Let me know if you have questions!



BTW, the house is in Montreat, it's a bit of a drive from little Switz, but I'd rather drive a bit and sleep in a bed than camp or drive home.

Also, the terms for using the house are simple: No drinking, no smoking, nothing illegal, don't break anything, be respectful, we're being allowed to use it free of charge and this could potentially be used in the future if this goes well!

We're planning on skating some of NC's best terrain. We'll be starting in Little Switzerland on Saturday morning (exact meeting spot will be posted soon), and skating highway 226a. This run is 6-7 miles long, mellow at the top, and 50mph with lots of turns at the bottom. Traffic is very light. We'll also be skating Big Hill Road in Boone which is just as good. In between we'll be on the Blue Ridge Parkway skating various spots, and hopefully finding some new ones.

We want as many people as we can get to come out, no matter the skill level. If you're not ready to go 50mph, but ready to get better, come out and those who a little more experience will be glad to offer some pointers. Please bring all of your friends who skate!

For those who have a couple boards lying around, go ahead and bring them for those who might not have a dedicated DH deck. Also bring anything you may want to trade/sell just in case.

As far as housing for the night, I'm working on seeing if we can manage to find a house to stay at in the area, if that falls through there are inns. There's also the option of freezing our asses off camping. Weather will be cold obviously. Bring some underarmour if you have it, thermals, leathers, two pairs of jeans, thick socks, whatever.

Also, I plan on bringing a camera or two so we can get some footage and make video afterwards.

I AM IN!!! I won't be able to make the 20th... my flight to columbia is the 21st.

but the 27-28th I will definitely steal my parents car to come skate. Whats the speeds on the fastest run? I need to know whether to bring leather. My parents recently bought some land in little switzerland so we may be able to camp there..... I'll call and ask tonight.

I would bring leathers. Speeds on 181 and the bottom part of bhr are 50+. This is going to be an epic after christmas present....

If you have never skated NC mountain roads, you're missing out on some truly epic runs! Most roads are butter smooth and fast. I'm sure these dates will be the first of many to come in the upcoming season.

This is going to be such a sick ride. I bet we will have a decent crowd at these freerides and this is just the beginning of what is about to come. Oh and dont be surprised if their is an outlaw race in 2009 located in the blueridge mtns.

I must say... I think NC has some of the best untapped/unknown downhill skating in the States. 226a is still on my definite to-hit list. Wish I could be there shredding with you guys.

I'm not sure which set of dates I'll come down on but I'd guess the second set so I can have someone drive down with me.

Yeah I recommend the second date...haha. Anyways yeah I agree about switz, Chris maybe the bottom 3 or 4 miles would be a good race at 226a. That should be the first outlaw in nc this year.

Seems like the second session will be bigger, so if you're coming a long way and can only make one, I'd go for the second. I'd still love to get as many people to come as possible to the first session as well. That way we can also find some more roads for the second.

hmmmm, 2 hours drive to snowboard in PA, or 10 hour drive to skate in NC, this is very tempting, but i think that it would be very difficult for me to do.
