Re: Event Report: The Samich Run
I just want to tell you guys what longboarding has done to improve my life. I started riding longboards about 2 1/2 years ago. The previous decade I had focused on mountainboarding , and had met alot of great friends. I met both Jumbo (PuppY_K1ck3R) and Hung (Sk8norcal) through mountainboarding sessions and events. Most of my mountainboarding friends don't live in my area, so I would only getting to session with others when travelling to competitions and events. So, a couple of years ago I bought a longboard, and knowing that Jumbo rode, I called him. He quickly invited me to ride at a Black Diamond Sports session (Mayfield, Palo Alto). I quickly learned to slide and had fun bombing the small hill. From then on I was hooked, I purchased a bunch of cool equipment and get to ride weekly with a bunch of the BEST friends that anyone could ask for. Now I Share the Stoke weekly with my friends and others!

The Sammich Run '08
Every once in a while, a story comes along of something that just makes us think the world might not be headed straight to perdition. Recently, we learned about a skater in San Francisco named Jumbo. Seriously, that sounds funny, but it turns out the only aspect of Jumbo Duclayan that's oversized might be his heart...
Spreading the most basic of stoke... The San Francisco Sammich Run
This year was the 5th Annual Sammich Run! It was an idea I had come up with years back. Basically, I wanted to get my friends to skate through San Francisco with me. But a lot of them stopped skating for one reason or another. Also I wanted to do something to help the homeless whenever I went and skated through San Francisco. Hence the “Sammich Run”: we’d skate through town on Christmas, and hand out sandwiches to people that could use one. No cost, no catch, just Merry Christmas.
HC A.K.A “Sk8norcal” and Nathan taking the streets by force.
This is the first year in which I decided to photograph this event. I don’t think I will photograph next year’s event just because I feel like it slows down the flow of us skating around and handing out sandwiches. So here is a rare glimpse of what my friends and I do for Christmas.

Man that is really cool of you. I appreciate that. I don't think there is going to be problems with cash next year I hope. But yes I will keep you in mind. Again thank you for offering.

Re: Event Report: The Samich Run
I think that this is one of the most brilliant things I have ever read on the internet. I really hope you don't mind if I take your idea to use in my hometown.
As for not taking photos of future events. I think you should. You take some awesome photographs. I'm no professional, but you take some very evocative photos. I know the other guy said that pros don't do the shots with B/W and some colour, but I think you know what will appeal to the vast majority of people who look at them. Please continue to take them of your future events. It is a service to yourself and the people participating to be recognized like that.
Thanks for caring and for sharing.

I have no problem whatsoever with you doing the same thing. In fact, this was our goal for people to follow this example and to do their own thing. Im very glad we've inspired you to do this. As for the pictures, its still up in the air.

excellent, i as well will be doing a 160 mile skate with buds for the homeless. inspiring thank you for being such great people.
You dont have to thank us Bauer. When you say were great people I believe were doing nothing special. We're just doing what people should've been doing this whole time which is help other people in need. See, I like doing this during Christmas in SF. Why? you ask?
Well, when you cruise through Union Square and other shopping areas, all you see are people with their shopping bags going about their business. All they care about is the crap they're buying. This is what Christmas has evolved to in the US. Everyone is all about getting stuff and thats it. When we hand a sandwich to someone who needs it. I see people look from the corner of their eye. And for a brief second they think about what really is important here. Its about giving. Look, Im not against consumerism or material things. Hell Im guilty of buying expensive stuff all the time. But I think this is what most people have become. Getting some for themselves and thats it.
So this year my GF and I didint buy each other presents. We didint recieve any from anyone either. All we wanted to do is give. And I think it was a pretty good Christmas after all.

Re: Event Report: The Samich Run
I'm so glad you decided to publicize this on the fish because I live in the bay area and skate around market and union square from time to time and would have been overjoyed to have joined you every year you've done this. And it is truely amazing to see the population of homeless that inhabit the market st union square area, very unfortunate that, that many peoples are homeless in the cold of winter.(even if it is cali it still gets coooold! brrr) PROPS MAJOR STOKE!!!! TAKE ME WITH YOU NEXT YEAR!!!
on a side note the homeless really appreciate it when you talk to them, they arent scary at all (unless you meet a bipolar person having a really bad day), they just dont like being ignored all the time like they are subhuman or something
MAJOR STOKE MUCH LOVE
