Re: Downhill Helmet
I don't see why everyone is expecting a cheap DH skateboarding specific helmet to pop up soon. Everything takes time to develop and time = money.
If you want a cheap DH helmet buy a bicycle fullface and make your own visor.

thank you drc! developing a new product for a niche market is NEVER cheap.
retail price is looking to be just under $300, which is around the price of a charly no limit with a tinted visor or a Icaro 4flight, but much safer.
we are working on lowering the helmet in the back just a little, just enough to cover the back of your skull and still not impede movement while tucking.

how about you make more than the price quoted so you can go buy some other #### too while you're at it. you've got a price, now make that much money.
besides, are you going to quit your job once you make *insert quoted price here*??? i mean wtf man.

i wouldn't worry about people bitching about price.
how many people have already plopped down the 300-350 CDN bucks for a charly, or the 600-1000 dollars for a custom aero lid?
if this thing is even in the ball park of 350 bucks, and it does what you say its going to do, you will probably have no problem selling them.
cheap dh helmet = bell drop
if you want something better, dont bitch when its more expensive.

i can't give exact pricing yet since i don't know. helmet is still in the early proto-type phase. i promise as soon as the owner of predator lets me know, you guys will know...as said earlier, he is shooting in the area of $300.

Re: Downhill Helmet
doesn't seem inappropriate to me that a helmet would cost as much as a complete setup. it's just as important as the board. if you aren't using one you might as well not use the other.
very interested to see this thing done. been looking at it for a long while.
Did you not know that the royal hunting grounds are always forbidden?

Re: Downhill Helmet
in all the pics ive seen of the new lid with the visor it appears to be using a charly. is there plans for a predator specific visor? or are you gonna use the charlys?

Re: Downhill Helmet
even if it was around the same price of the charly or the icaro i would still get it seeing that it's much safer (it is right?). davidp...so will the prototypes make an appearance at newtons??

its looking unlikely to have the proto-types done in time for newton's. we want the product to be perfect before anyone(including myself) sees in it person. don't want to rush anything...you can still track me down at newton's and check out the predator that i'm using to get a basic idea of the helmet.
and yes, a custom fitting visor is part of the agende, its kinda whats taking a long time, the owner of predator does'nt have much experience making visors, so its taking a little longer than normal to find the right manufacturer and get production going.

No but if you fly off the top of your longbard at say 50MPH, and land on your head. You WILL hit the floor at 50MPH and be hurt alot.

wrong. at 50mph, you're moving laterally, not vertically. the helmet needs to be designed to endure sliding ACROSS the pavement @ 50mph, and sustain the impact of whiplash against the concrete. That is the most substantial force that a helmet for DH will need to be designed for.
There are going to be times that you will run into things (cars, guardrails, etc.), but a DH helmet is going to be designed for the things posted above.

I think what he's trying to say is that your like a bullet, when you drop a .308 round from 5 feet up and fire another out of a level gun at 5 feet up they are going to hit the ground at the same time with the exact same amount of vertical force. The difference is that the one fired out of the gun has a horizontal impact force going about 1500 ft/sec, so you still have the same force vertically but the real tramatic injury is caused by after affects of the fall as you bounce down the hill possibly landing on your head multiple times, or hitting persay a brick wall...

nope, lateral velocity and vertical velocity are independent.
the only time you would hit your head at 50mph is if you slid head first into something going 50 mph.

or slam a car... that could be going 30mph which would be like an 80mph impact...
