Hey all, the screen on my laptop got shattered a couple days ago, awesome huh? Along with it was access to all of the pics I have taken and wasn't able to upload. So I had to dig out the old PC. Is there a way to hook up the laptop to a regular monitor without the use of half the screen? I plugged an old monitor into the port but it did squat. I'm going to look through the HP site to see but if someone could help me out that would be awesome. I have printouts for all board orders but would like access to the originals to answer any order questions. Yes, I should have backed it up on a flash drive but I'm an idiot!

Here is what I use often, I just open up the laptop and hook the ide end of this to the hard drive, then plug the usb into a working computer. Then you can pull all of your data off of the laptop if you wish, or just get the info you want.

So basically, you want to mirror your desktop from your laptop screen to the external monitor. It should be easy enough. On most current computers/laptops, if you plug in the monitor before boot, the system should auto detect and mirror your image to the other monitor if you haven't previously configured it for another option. If this doesn't work, usually there is usually a keyboard button that you can push to toggle through the options (Mirror, Expanded, Off). For Dells, this is toggled by pressing the Fn button+F8. I work at UCDavis as IT help desk and our office is almost entirely Dells. Let me know if you need any help.

P.S. Legendary's suggestion is also a good way to go about getting your data back. I'd personally go with a harddrive enclosure instead.

Edit: so with the devises you guys pointed out I can copy most of the data from my hard drive before I send it out for repairs? I'm sure it will take a while for them to fix and I'd love to have most of my info.

Yeah, almost all laptops have Function keys at the top which are usually in Blue or some other color then the F keys. And one of them should like like a small box surrounded by a box or something to the sort. If you hook up a monitor or a projector to the laptop, you can hold the Fn key and hit that button and it will change the display to the monitor, or both. There are like 3 display settings.
Most likely your key is F4 or F5.

If you cant get that to work, Radio Shack and several other places sell what are basically external hard drive shells for 3.5mm hard drives which are laptop hard drives. One of the larger slots that you can unscrew on the bottom of your laptop will contain the hard drive which is held in by like 2 or 3 screws, some are actually not even screwed in. But you just slide it out, pop it into the external shell and hook it up via USB to a desktop computer.

No not really. It has all my board order files on it but I have printouts of them all so that's not a problem. All pics I've taken are still trapped in the damn thing though. I'm going to work on it tonight.

Great question timing. Finally the light at the end of the tunnel just about reached! Still don't have pics or access to my board order info for quick reference but almost all orders are in final stages at this point.

I can now start taking orders again for boards but on a limited scale. The pre made decks are in the process of being built as well and will be available soon. I will take only 5 new board orders a week, custom or regular, for the time being so that the production is in a constant flow and I can work back up to build speed. It's also going to give me time to work on new production methods and new boards.
