    Default skater Vs.vehicle

My son just called me at work, his friend Fernando was hit by a van this morning while skating to school. He is home resting now with a broken collar bone.
I am so pissed,I consider this young man a member of my family & I gave him his first longboard. When will drivers understand the they don't own the road, they must share it with other forms of transportation.
Also when the paramedics were loading him in the ambulance they made a commit
    skater Vs vehicle,vehicle wins.

These sorts of comments are only humorous when there's no pain involved.

There were no winners, it's more appropriately said "skater vs vehicle, skater loses". Only losers, no winners.

I have just found out the names of the paramedics that tended him,but then it occurred what could I say that would change their attitude.

what attitude. it is there job, whether paid or volunteer to help people.

they my laugh at the situation amongst themselves, but they shouldn't be giving the patient attitude.

I think they were just saying, that even if the vehicle is the guilty one, the skater is the one who will be injuried.

who was at fault? was the skater skating illegally? (like on the road where there was a sidewalk available?) or at a cross walk or do you not know? hope he recovers soon.

He was rideing in the street with the flow of traffic, the van struck him from behind. All the sidewalks are crap in our town, even the people w/elect chairs use the street. The driver of the van was not ticketed or charged.

i know it may seem wrong, but in there line of duty they have to have a sense of humor. if you went around all day picking up people who have been sevearly injured, it would get to you. My sister is an emt and she says the hardest thing to do is to not take a personal attachment. You can feel sorry for the person but you cant feel bad about what happened. it can effect your judgement.

my freind hit a car going about 30 a week or two ago and broke both shin bones in his right leg. he quote unquote said the exact same thing. All the paramedics laughed. Its just something they have to get used to.

But i am sorry this happened. its never good when a skater gets hit.

that's messed up and makes me scared to skate. Not ticketed or charged?

He was hit from behind, which obviously means the driver saw him unless it was a corner and the driver's view was blocked by trees/houses/etc.

    this sounds intentional

even though skaters are technically considered pedestrians... It is very hard to charge a law abiding car for hitting a skater. We are not as easy to see as most and we dont have any other breaks besides our feet and maybe a quick standie or two. Im used to getting hit by a car once a month atleast. Ill be skating down the sidewalk and a car will look one way but not the other and just speed out of a stop and hit me. Its hard to just let it go but sometimes you just gotta.

So many opportunities for debate here. I'll just say I'm sorry to hear your little bro got hit but am glad he's alive with a good prognosis for recovery. Get well quick.

I would think that the driver would at least be fined, could hitting someone be considered assault

I had a car pull out in front of me once and I walked away fine but left a nice dent in the side of the car.

One of my friends jumped on his board and bombed an unknown, dark street in the middle of austin at night. At some point he bailed because he was going to fast or something, and rolled to the side of the road. However, his board kept on going and somehow flipped up and extremely dented a passing SUV's door. The car stopped but I guess they didnt see the board, and kept on going while he was behind a car hiding. Lucky as hell, i say

But that driver must have been retarded, I can't believe he wasn't fined

I appriciate everyone's support & I'll be sure to pass it along to Fernando. He said while he's recovering he'll draw up the shape of the new board that I'll be making him & it should be ready when he's 100 % again....well maybe atleast 99%
