seeing as it's dropped through it's probably not bad.
Trust me, by the time you're 19 you'll have seen 1000 more things that you'd never have attempted at 14. High School and College open up a lot of doors (and legs).
I laugh so hard at how mature I thought I was at sixteen, and three more years from now I'll probably be laughing at how mature I think I am now. Leaps and bounds of life experiences are all about to pile onto you. Hang on and have fun. You're only a stupid teenager once.
That was a lot closer to advice than offensive. You can't even comprehend what's coming your way.

I came back to boarding last year after 20 years. I bought some lame 34 inch complete just to see if I still could get around on one. Of course I needed a kick tail, that is what I always rode when I was younger
Once I got back into it, I rode someone's Sector9 andit was so much nicer, so I bought a 38 inch Cosmic Wave. I put some 9 inch Gullwings and 4Presidents on it. I wanted something kinda long with a kick tail. Well once I had crossed into longboard territory and got into it a bit, I hardly used the kicktail....
Then I got a Dervish and never looked back. A kicktail seems so completely useless now.
I would say get a good flat drop thu and ride it for a while. After a couple weeks the kicktail will feel like its in your way.
Oh, and 14 vs. 19? are you kidding me?
at least Shift knows he doesn't know anything, that puts him waaay ahead
if you can get your hands on the old landyachtz drop-carve do it. its a great deck. the wood versions tail is much more functional than the fiber-glass model. but the fiber-glass model's tail is definitely functional. you'll have to look around for one but its definitely worth it.
also check out longboard larry. the newt is a cool cruiser thats drop through with a tail. he also does custom boards so you can draw it out with him and get a one of a kind made for you

That's where your immaturity shows. He's 19. I'm 19. NineTEEN. If your age ends in TEEN, you're still a stupid teenager. Embrace it, go hogwild and prove to the world that teenagers really are stupid, reckless, and ignorant.
Get the Eastside Dropkick, it's a killer board and the tail is perfect. Rob McGuirk makes some sick decks, he's a sick skater, and he's done more for the skate scene in the Pacific Northwest than most people will ever dream of doing, support the small guys, he appreciates every purchase, I guarantee it.

Thats what I was saying, you dont need a kicktail then bookworm started mouthing off

Im done with you guys, you assume that since Im 5 years younger Im so much more immature than you. I could be just as mature as you. You dont know me. I was being humorous
Lots of drop-thru's have tails, for example the dervish has a tail And so does the hellcat and drop speed, they just arent that big. The tail doesnt need to be huge.
im suprised no one said this but,
welcome to the fish haha.
btw, i dont think a kick on a drop thru is much help. if anything i'd prolly try to make the board but drops are usually large in length and the leverage would be horrible to it being so close to the ground. i'd say start sliding and sh*t like that and leave the tricks for the shortboard (or board with flat nose/tail or nubs as sk8 would call em for shuvits). but, its all opinion.
maybe gravity hyper/mini carves, original hybrid, or some other hybrid? just a suggestion

the kicktail on the strike is pretty pointless, its hard to explain but the length of the board compared to the amount of leverage you get on the kick tail makes things like kickturning hard
nelson (nelson longboards) makes a board with a kick tail that he could make drop-thru.
Its about halfway down this page ~~~~~ Nelson Longboards ~~~~~
i agree in order for a tail to really be functional, I feel like the board needs to be short enough that you can comfortably have a foot in the font of the board and the kick. the latest proto of the hybrid that you posted is 37" long with a 25" WB. and even though i have a relatively wide stance, i find myself resting my back foot closer to the bolts rather then at the bulk of the tail. so i'm about to press a new one with a slightly shorter WB, and some flat cave.
to the OP the reason theres not to many drop boards with kicktails is because of how weak that area would be, due to the lack of material, as well as the difficulty of making the kicktail stiff and functional. on the board i kake with wheel cutouts and a kicktail i used fiberglass and carbon, to keep the kictail stiff but keep the board light with some flex.
and to Matt C. A 2.5" nose/tail =/= 5-7" kictail. you may be able to pull off shovits and tigerclaws or w/e. but it definitely wont be easy to ollie, kickturn easily, blunt slide.

Matt, I seriously reccomend being a stupid teenager. Today I saw a nice clean shiny toilet on the side of the road. So my friends and I loaded it into the car, drove up to the hills, and threw it off a cliff. pouring trails of gasoline on the road so your friend can make a "back to the future" picture with his car is a stupid teenager move. Vaulting three people while sprinting "ferris bueller" through a random campsite on ecstasy was a stupid teenager moment. Stupid teenager moments have been a good chunk of the best moments of my life.

I wish I could be a stupid teenager again. Then I can go back to dating slutty teenagers......
I used to skate a short board 15 years ago. When I recently got back into skating and it was longboards I freaked a little that 90% of the boards didn't have any kind of tail. I understand now why it's not a big deal. My Landyachtz Drop Hammer has enough of a tail that I can pull a manual when I need to but, I find myself NOT needing a tail anymore. The Drop Hammer is a smaller drop through and has a nub of a tail. Have your friend check that out. Good for just about any kind of riding you will throw at it.
Maybe he should get a board with a kick first then get a seperate one thats drop thru cuz im not sure how well the drop kick will ollie, it might not be good if the boards a drop thru. Ive seen the tails of drop thrus break off when kicked too hard
I think everyone here has swayed him in the direction of just getting a flat dropthrough board. He was riding my sunset late last night, and he was commenting on how he maybe just doesn't need a kicktail. I don't know, we'll see what he ends up with. I'll let you know, and thanks for the input, I think he's going to end up getting the Eastside Dropkick.
