Re: what the %#^$ is that?
Yes, I disagree.
Stupidity isn't a measure of intensity.
If I run out onto the highway on purpose and get hit by a bus and killed......was the intensity level of that comparable to that of a NASCAR race?
Dumb comparison.
Although I nearly fell asleep watching that video, it does look like fun. I'd participate in something like that if they had it down in Florida.
Madrid 41 Drop, Randal II 50 degree, 75mm 83a In Heats, Super Reds, 87a top/93a bottom conical set...low stiff and very fast.
S9 Bomb Hills, Paris 150, 68mm Zigs, Minilogos, 93a Conical top/90a Barrel bottom...dedicated LDP board
Loaded Dervish, Flex 1, Randall II, 83a Durian, Venom 87a top/90a bottom conical set, Bombsquad nose guards...great everything board

Re: what the %#^$ is that?
The intensity is racing 250 other skaters down an 8.1 mile stretch of a major city street. No video can portray that. There is big money to be won for a reason in this race.
You can call it stupid or whatever, but what, going downhill at 50mph is a smart idea?

wtf! This is a forum about longboarding?!?! This whole time I thought it was about the mechanical advances of pogo sticks and assorted arrays of fruit flavored cereals.

Umm if theirs big money in it maybe its because 250 skaters x $ entry fee = a large pot. Notice though how there are 250 people who can easily participate in this event in one town and only a small fraction of that can do even the lesser downhill events around the world. And i wasnt arguing that either of the two were necessarily "smart" things to do. Im arguing that what they are doing takes absolutely no skill and is essentially free riding in traffic. And i would think if they were atleast "good freeriders" then cars would have to be continually stopping to make sure not to kill any of them.
I dont know if your quite getting my arguement here. Im not saying this doesnt look fun or cool or whatever. If this were close to me i would participate in it too. My argument is about the skill it takes. And the skill it takes to free ride around town is in no way comparable to what it takes to bomb a windy hill doing 50+.

I couldnt agree with you more man. And im not saying this isnt my "stroke" either. I would be stoked to have a massive in town ride with all of my homies at my side. My argument is that i could get baked, drink a little, and do this without a problem... mostly because it doesnt require skill.
Hey, prove me wrong, have any of the guys on that video go and bomb claremont, or even tunnel for that matter. Just make sure someone video tapes it so we can all watch the concrete beat their ass and break their bones after the first hard left.

There is no entry fee. And the road is straight more or less. Why dont you throw in a few 90mph hairpins in your comparison while you are at it. It takes skill to get a good position, many of the top placing people are very skilled skaters. Keeping up with them is intense. Period.

Re: what the %#^$ is that?
Skating full tilt in NYC is, in my opinion, just as fun/exciting as a good hill bomb. It is multi tasking at its most gnar. Kicking, pumping, dodging cars, peds, obstacles etc., timing lights, communicating with traffic (verbal, hand signals). If done right, yes, there is substantial skill involved. A good run down Broadway is a well orchestrated symphony of managed mayhem.

I dont know anyone who does 90 mile an hour hairpins so i dont know why i would throw that in there. ####, bombing your locol "killer hill" going 30 mph takes more skill then that ####. There may be skilled riders what they are doing does not take skill. Your trying to argue that it takes skill to free ride around town on a board which is what everyone on this site does. Could you bomb claremont or any hill of that calliber?... Cause i sure as hell could do what there doing with my eyes closed. (I could close my eyes since my life is in the hands of drivers around me and not in my own hands).

Re: what the %#^$ is that?
I'm sure that if a large group of zombies ran out onto the highway during rush hour traffic to see who could wobble over to the other side and they all got bashed in the face and died except for one, someone could argue that it takes skill to win a race like that.
But that can't be compared to a real competition, such as football, baseball, soccer or any other highly skilled sport.
Seeing who cares less about their own well being doesn't constitute skill or bravery. It's idiotic immaturity, that's all.

No.
What they were doing on the video does look like fun.
But I was arguing with what Alpha06 was saying.
Fancy free fun? Sure. But would I call it a structured/governed race full of highly skilled participants? Hell no.

I assure you, nobody has ever considered the BWayB structured, governed or full of highly skilled participants. But, the highly skilled ones place several minutes ahead of the pack. And the pack, for the most part, ain't no slouches either.
