I will be the first to admit I have no way of verifying that I went 41 mph, that is just what some random guy in a van shouted at me after trailing me down to a stoplight. Though, with foot braking and considering it took about 700 feet to slow down to a comfortable level of speed, I wouldn't doubt the accuracy of his statement, but I have no physical evidence to show you all.
As for 'first day', this is true that it was my first day of ACTUAL longboarding. I have been skateboarding before, though I treated my skate board more as a longboard, taking it down hills and whatnot (nothing serious though). I also surf, snowboard and am an all around adrenaline junkie. I'll work on getting a vid with some sort of proof, if I can enlist the help of some locals. The fiance isn't too stoked about me doing this in a t-shirt, cargo pants, a helmet, and gardening gloves, so she will have no part in it. I got a few buddies who might gimme a hand, just gotta get around to it. I'll see what I can do.
BTW.... any tips on learning to slide? Adam and Adam and Cowboy aren't doing me much good on youtube. Suggestions?

Re: My first longboard, VERY 'surfy'
First of all, sliding needs your wheels to be "broken in". That will take either a lot of riding, or forcing it by trying to slide while not broken in. Secondly, your wheels are very large and will be extremely difficult to slide, unless they've been broken in to a point where they don't even have grip. Anyways, I would just get comfortable riding more often before jumping into slides.
If you have money or can find some, you could consider used wheels and try learning with those. Though you could slide your wheels, it'll be difficult and they're also really expensive, wouldn't be nice to break down by sliding in my opinion...

I slide my buddy's demonseed w/ 97mm flys all the time. It really isn't that difficult at all (broken in of course). Now i'm not going to say it's easier to slide his board over my board with o-tangs durians... just saying it's not as big of a deal as ppl make it out to be - it just makes a mean, head turning sound when sliding.
However, and this is a big however, I have no idea how sliding a board with that wide of a stance is like. I'd love to barrow someones S10s for a day. Highly interested!
Working on my next mountain dew commercial with this hill.

Random guys in vans =/= accurate speedometers
You should probably work on footbreaking a little more, or get new shoes.

the boardsport background really helps, as for sliding its quite easy youll learn when youre not expecting to wear in your wheels by a few hours of HARD carving then get some speed and practice some hairpin corners and continue pushing out harder and harder carves eventually youll feel your wheels start to brake loose i suggust toeside shutdown slides first with two hands on the ground

Re: My first longboard, VERY 'surfy'
97mm wheels are hard to stop. I love them for the flats as they roll further,... but they also give more resistance when foot braking down a hill.
Yeah they will be easy to slide,... but a ton of people had trouble with the 97s having so much leverage against the axles, that they ended up bending them. Id say having a set of biltins might give you less chance of that happening,...
97mm wheels spin forever, they will spin a very long time on Reds too.
Great setup,... enjoy it man,... but be careful of hills. Footbraking from that high up is hard work.

What did you mean in the video when you said that the S10 trucks were mounted on backwards?
And Bones Reds aren't ceramic, unless you got the ceramic Super Reds...

Re: My first longboard, VERY 'surfy'
Funny I should see this thread today... I just re-built one of my boards and took it out for it's first run today. Yup, Original S10 and 97mm Flys. I put mine on G-Bomb brackets bolted to a flexy-ass Subsonic deck.. aside from the G-Bomb part, it's pretty similar to what you've done. I did a 7-mile push/pump run on the local bike trail, it was awesome! Those Flys make the back end slip out too easy for agressive pumping, but it's a killer push setup.
Hope you're digging yours as much as I'm digging mine!
.
Why are you reading my sig? It's boring.

Chill.
Over-tightening can break original trucks, they are not intended for DH, and shouldn't be rock solid, it seems a bit like an extraordinary claim.
