The only bikers that give me problems are the pseudo professional idiots that think they own the trail because they can afford a 3000 dollar bike and a lycra suit. The rest of them are pretty chill. It's always bad when peeps take themselves too seriously.

el animal and jamesonyo, get a room. ALG is right, in most states, bikes are required to act as a motor vehicle. Just be nice and go around them, you would expect the same. The only way to make changes to others behavior is to first change your behavior.

To the best of my knowledge, there are only 2 BMX tracks in all of Los Angeles County. Contrast that to several dozens of skateparks all around the county.

And today, the majority of BMX riders don't race, so a track, if one is located nearby, is useless to them. Kind of like the city telling us we don't need a skatepark because there's a hill we can race on...

If they want to do something with their bikes that they weren't made for than that's their problem.
Many "BMX" bikes are not designed for off-road use at all. Several are designed specifically for flatland freestyle, or street, or parks. Different construction, different components, different frame geometry/handling characteristics. "BMX" is just a convenient catch-all name, and besides, the original BMX bikes evolved from a bike not designed to be jumped or used in the dirt. So back in 1970, if you were riding BMX on a track, you were using the bike for something it wasn't made for

And since when does a name dictate what can and cannot be done with something? If that were true, as skateboarders we couldn't use parking garages, drainage ditches, swimming pools, handrails, sidewalks, etc. For that matter, skateboards used to be called "sidewalk surfboards", so I guess the only place we should be allowed to use them is on the sidewalks (except those are only for "walking"...)

Bike bells are awesome! Saves your breath and people get outta your way.
Some skater had a pic of him with a bike bell on his helmet. Great idea! BING!

I agree,... yelling or clapping pucks sometimes scares people. A bell is a friendly way to let people know you are coming.

Seriously, bicyclists are encouraged to take the center of the lane. It is the safest thing for them to do, if they don't their life gets a lot riskier.

And remember people it's a MAXIMUM speed limit, not a minimum and not a requirement.

I personally encourage them not to ride on narrow curvy mountain roads. I knew a kid back in highschool that hit a cyclist going down a mountain. It broke his side mirror off and chunks of hair covered flesh and blood was all over his door panel and right A post. He said the cyclist was on in the center of a road. It was either hit the cyclist or veer off the road and down the mountain.

I would have sh!t myself. I know the cyclist was hurt. Parts of his scalp were stuck on the broken part of the side mirror. He said the cyclist got up and said he was fine and they parted. I would have gave the dude a ride to the hospital because I mean dude.. I saw chucks of the guys scalp and blood... it was nasty. Dudes... it's no joke.

I had a teacher that cycled. He showed be his ex-rays where a car ran him off the road and down a ravine. He said he was air lifted to Grady and spend a few weeks in the hospital and had major reconstructive surgery in his leg. I think he broke some ribs too.

It was those cross country Lance Armstrongs, complete with spandex and water bottles. I don't remember last time I rode a bike. It's been so long. I ride motorcycles though. I gots a bad knee from years of skating lol.

I've always been into extreme sports. When I was young, and into my motocross days, I remember saying to my friends "I don't understand why old people are so afraid to get hurt...........they're going to die soon anyway"

Now that I'm older, and still into extreme sports, I can say that it's not the fear of getting hurt that's the problem.

But, just like above, it's that I have responsibilities now that can't be inhibited by any injury I might have. When I was young, all I did was sit in class. So, who the heck cares if I'm injured or not? Plus, being injured in school helped me pick up a lot of chicks

    I........don't?

I really don't feel comfortable on a bike, I ride in the road. Besides, it sounds like with what you're doing, you're one tiny mistake away from a gnarly crash, which seems pretty sketch to me. Whether or not you succeed, it's still sketch to be dodging obstacles on a skinny ass path at high speeds.

I would never ride a bike I couldn't bunnyhop. Takes away too much versatility in the suburbs or downtown. Yeah, I mainly ride a BMX now, but I've ridden other types of bikes before and a road bike wouldn't survive how I ride.

Saw a lot of fixies downtown at the Red Bull Soap Box Race yesterday. I still don't understand the allure.

I also kind of question the speed this guy was driving at. I stay under speed limit, and adjust for corners I know have low visibility. I tend to want to avoid ruining someone's day with my car. Drive safe kids, for everyone else, not for you.

Something is *really* wrong in this scenario. If the cyclist were in the middle of the road, in order to have the damage/blood on the right side of the vehicle, the car would've had to have been on the left side of the road, not the right, which puts your friend at least as much at fault as the cyclist. Unless the cyclist was not in the center of the road, but actually over in the opposing lane, assuming the two were going in opposite directions. Which would then make the accident the cyclist's fault for being on the wrong side of the road, but still doesn't explain how the impact was on the right side. Unless the cyclist was so far past the center that he was almost on the opposing shoulder. And if they were both going in the same direction, that puts your friend 100% at fault.

But in any case, this isn't an example of how being on a bike on a mountain road is inherently unsafe. Rather, it shows what can happen when either the driver or the cyclist does something illegal...
