I'm lovin' it.
So if anyone saw this thread: Hey all, first post, longboard for bad ankles? Sidewinders? you know I just bought an Earthwing WiderGlider to get back into skating. So, this isthe update to that thread.
The board came in on monday really late in the day. I unboxed the board, took it outside and took a few laps around our dorms. I was astounded and overjoyed. Even with my ankle problems the width of the board, the looseness of the trucks and everything else came together. I felt like I did when I used to skate on the shorter boards only....better. Way better. Not only did I have more fun but I felt at ease, like I'd come home. It was a weird feeling but a good one. Unfortunately Monday found me with a procrastinated essay and so...I only got to ride for 15 minutes.
Tuesday. Had class. Rode around shortly again, maybe 30 minutes, still happy. Put some stickers on the board, gave it a hug, set it down, did homework.
Wednesday, classes all day. And when I was done at 6:40 first thing I did was grab the board and ride till it got too dark.
Thursday and Friday. Ankles were sore but not bad, much better then when I play hockey even. I spent 2-3 hours each day on thursday and Friday longboarding. I explored our whole campus and had a blast experiencing little hills and dips in a new way. Tomorrow is Sunday, I'm sore after an all day hockey tournament today so I'll sleep in tomorrow and then its right back on the board.
For me, the last several years of my life have been about limitations and making my disability work. Longboarding brings an instant smile to my face. I think myFacebook status after fridays ride says it best:
Nothing is better then shredding through some parking lots carving it up and having your t-shirt flap in the wind. :]
Thanks guys for all the suggestions thus far. I am having so much fun again. I love it here, the last couple days if Im not on my board/at hockey/eating/sleeping/at class I'm here reading. Look forward to many further updates from me. Keep riding everyone.
Btw, I already want to buy another board. A little cruiser maybe, eh? Lol, I think my mom would #### a brick...I dont think I told her how much I paid for this one yet....

haha, you are just like me. as soon as I buy a new board, I have another one I already want. You will find yourself in a couple years with a whole quiver full of boards. After one year, mine is already 8 decks (3 homemade), 4 are set up. When I grow up, If I end up with a lot of disposable income, I could see myself buying stuff left and right like Dozerdoggie .

I cleaned my bearings and wheels yesterday and loosened up my trucks and love the feeling cleaned/re-lubed bearings feel like...
So fresh.

Alright spread the stoke! Seriously though, are you not riding it to class? It's better for your mental health if you do, I think.

Re: I'm lovin' it.
Thank everyone for all your comments.
I actually havent been riding t to class for a couple reasons,(nowhere to put it, weird terrain, etc.) but I may start.
As far as parking garages. We'll see. Right now I'm riding without a helmet...uh oh if mom knew...But I know my limits and I'm not doing anything I know is too dangerous or that I ant handle. Parking garages scare and intrigue me. Someday, with a helmet and some padding I could be there. Right now I gotta get down carving as a way of controlling my speed.
I have a little bit of a speed wobble when I really get going, I think I already know this is from my loose trucks. I really like my trucks this way, so I doubt I'll be changing hem though, so we'll see. I've got some thought to put into it.
I ended up riding for about 15 minutes today..but that'll proably be it. I want to ride but I am so sore from 4 hockey games yesterday, plus I got me some gnarly menstrual cramps and a psych test to study for so...thats gonna limit my riding time. We'll see though. I'm gonna try and be out all day tomorrow after my test in the morning.

Re: I'm lovin' it.
try standing at the front of your board to avoid the wobbles.
-
Re: I'm lovin' it.
Thanks sheep, I'll give that a try.
-
Re: I'm lovin' it.
Wobbles aren't from the loose trucks, they're almost completely from the rider...but anywho
I'd definitely invest in getting a helmet, even for the mild cruising you're doing. Since you're not doing anything too big, soft-foam helmets might appeal to you; they're really comfortable and can tkae bumps and low speeds really well.
Be smart, wear a helmet

Re: I'm lovin' it.
I will definately be investing in a helmet...but I'm not gonna lie, I probably wont wear it when I'm just mildly cruising and such. I know the risks and I know all it takes is one fall or one car...but when I'm just cruising I love the feeling of no helmet, just me and the board. I will defiantely be investing in a helmet soon cause I know I'm gonna be tempted to really test my boundaries. I will still try to stay as safe as possible.

Re: I'm lovin' it.
GET SLIDE GLOVES! they look "cooler" than helemts and can save your skin and life just as well. Wear both...and day-um.

I'm not worried about what looks "cool". And I dont need slide gloves since I dont know how to slide and wont be trying to anytime in the very near future. Right now im mostly cruising and carving. Your post confuses me a little, lol.

Ha ha, thanks. I really want to get on my board again, its been two days cause I'm waiting for my elbow to heal up. I have a hockey tourney this weekend so realistically monday will be the next time I get on my board if my elbow is healed. Cant wait.
