Longboarding is a sub-division of skateboarding, the same way mountain biking, BMXing (whatever you want to call it), etc are sub-divisions of bicycling.

The word longboarding is used to convey the correct message to whoever you're talking to. If I say I'm going for a bike ride, people probably aren't going to assume that I'm hitting jumps or racing down the side of a mountain. If I say I'm going mountain biking, however, then it's more accurate. Same thing for longboarding/street skating/whatever else. If I say I'm going skateboarding (to people who don't know me and know that I don't street skate), people will most likely assume that I ride a trick deck.

Speaking of bike riders... 2 weeks ago I was ran off the super wide bike trail by a tandem cyclist toting his little son. I was so pissed, I turned around and tried to get in his face. He had at least 4 feet of room on his left... He about clipped me with his handle bars and I had wheels hanging off the edge of the pavement... Scratched my trucks up... Next time, I'ma scratch his kid up! Nah j/k. But I was super pissed. Probably more pissed than the time someone chucked a beer bottle at me and it exploded behind me.

When people refer to skateboarding, they are talking about the basic discipline of street/ park skate where you do pop tricks. How ever, cruising is not really considering skateboarding, although you are techinically skateboarding.


Thats why I hate that the campus says no skating when I'm just cruising to class. I see the disruption of shortboards with hard loud wheels, but i mean...

Every skater I've ran into claims he or she would rather get into longboards and ditch shortboards all together. I often sin and let people ride my board. I figure hey, the more people that taste it and get into it, the more people I will have to skate with later. That means I get to be king of the dumb asses until someone get's better than me. So far, it's just me and my Uncle skating once a week together. I ride everyday because I'm in college, but it's not a session.
