Default Normal Grip Tape vs. Clear Grip

Aight so it's come about time (already) that my Dervish's spray-on grip is wearing off, and I'm thinking of applying grip tape. I want tape that's REALLY grippy, and I'd like to get clear grip tape (I like to keep the original appearance), but obviously grippiness is more important. So my question is, does clear grip tape tend to be less grippy then normal grip tape? Or are there no differences with grippiness? Or are there different types of clear grip & normal grip that are grippier / less grippy? thx

Grippiness of grip tape depends on the brand. The grippiest clear grip I've ever used is Gravity clear grip, that can be found at Mile High Skates. The only problem is that it wears king of quickly. Thje grippiest black grip that I've used is Edger, but I've heard that Vicious is even better.

I feel that regular grip tape is much more grippy than clear. I have clear on my arbor and regular on my dervish and the dervish is much much more grippy.

I put some clear grip on one of my boards. There is no way its as sticky as Edger. Its not as easy to cut as hardcore grip tape (or regular black grip tape). You may get messy edges.

One of the other things I dont like about the clear stuff is that it gets dirty and looks ugly.

In short... clear grip is junk.

hmm... well gravity clear grip gets pretty good reviews.. it sounds like normal grip is still better tho. i'd go with it, it's just i don't think i'm artistic enough to put normal grip on in any kind of attractive way lol. there's no way i could do anything like this:
    http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs42/f/20...Gomeriffic.jpg

anyone come up with or seen a grip tape design for a dervish that looks clean & simple / looks good with the board, while not being too hard to do? cuz otherwise, i think i'm just gunna give gravity clear grip a shot.

The great thing about doing your own clear grip is you can control how grippy and thick it ends up. I re-gripped my friend's Vanguard with polycrylic and Tred-tex, and it looks and feels great.

I'm not sure I'd want to do that b/c in order to get the grip I want I would have to make it fairly thick and I'm afraid that that would screw up the flex on my dervish

i found that i can clean clear grip with a tooth brush and soap. and that doesnt work on black grip. having dirty stuck in your grip defeats the purpose. lol

That's another thing with DIY grip, it's as flexible as the base it's on. The reason griptape can affect flex is because the tape isn't as flexible as the deck. DIY grip is just grip embedded into the clearcoat (very flexible) - it's the same idea as the stock spray-on grip.

If you're still worried, I can vouch that the flex won't be affected - the Vanguard I did is definitely just as flexy as always.

Aight, but what about grip and durability / how long it lasts? I need heavy duty grip (I do a lot of heavy pumping & carving, manuals & shovits, you name it - i need grip that won't let my feet slide off, which as of right now with the stock grip happens a whole lot) - so the grip needs to be way better then the stock grip. After reading that thread, maybe crushed glass? But the problem with that is I often ride my board barefoot to get around campus....

But other then that that looks like a really attractive option. If I did do it I think I'd go with the polyurethane apply, let dry, reapply technique.

Clear = gravity clear. It is very grippy. don't waste your time with other clear.

Black = anything that isn't minilogo or jessup. Personal fav's are sundaeskates supergripy grip, wooster, madrid flypaper, edgar, and vicious. Edgar and Vicious are both ultimate level gnar, but vicious just beats out edgar IMO.

So just fyi everyone, I ended up just buying a roll of gravity clear - I wasn't feeling creative enough to come up with a design to do with black grip, so I just said what the hell, I might as well learn for once and for all whether I like clear grip or not and if I end up not liking it I can replace it.

Turns out what you guys said was right. This stuff DOES get dirty and look nasty. Just for that alone I think I'm gunna replace it with black grip. However, it grips well - better then the stock dervish grip for sure.. Not quite well enough as I would like for the nose & tail (i think i'm gunna buy some viscious for that), but plenty well enough for the main body of the board. It also wears and rips fairly easily, although that could be true of all griptape and that could be because I had it applied too close to the edge of the board, and I do a lot of tricks & flips and stuff so the top side of my board gets a lot of ground time. W.e. the case is, I think I'm gunna go with adam colton's dervish griptape design - nice and simple, functional, and easy to apply (you see the board laying on the ground right at the beginning of the video. crazy video btw, i'd never even think of doing a run like that):
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7Nompyihf8]YouTube - Raw Chinchilla: Speed Bumps[/ame]

Only prob is that leaves the middle ungripped, which I use a lot. I'm thinking of going with trex-dex (is that what it's called?) and polyurethane homemade clear grip.

grip is the least of my worries in longboarding, slap it on where your foot goes, then ride. no intricate designs or any of that bullcrap. or maybe that's just me.

I chose hexagons, hoping they wouldn't peel up at the corners too badly.

When it wears out I might try just plain black, see if the flex really is affected.

    damm, that's a sick design.

the adam colton design takes way less effort tho so i'm still probably gunna go with that lol

may i ask how you made those hexagons? did you just cut one hexagon and then trace? and did you use scissors to cut it or an exacto?
