Re: The cure to speed wobbles
Speed wobbles dont magically appear when you get nervous ok?
Get yourself into a big carve, use the whole street if you can. Dont jump off.
EVER.
Dont let your feet leave the board untill youre falling
focus on something at the bottom of the hill and dont stand up straight and all stiff like
its good advice
Also if you fall make sure you roll

kiss your arse goodbye
If you´r wearing leathers, spread out to slow down and let the leathers take the hit.
If not, your f7cked

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
anyways like i said if you roll i guarantee the damage will be less.
its still going to be severe tho lol
especially if youre like me and dont have the money for an all leather racing suit in Florida

Nah
I crashed in tshirt and short at 50... Rolling is the worst thing you can do coz your still gonna end up sliding A LOT. Only you'll be sliding everywhere on your skin. Not even counting all the tromas from the multiple inpacts you've had while rolling.
Sliding a bit on your leg and trying to get back to your gloves as much as you can appeared to wrk best for me...
Instead of getting 30 big/average bloody scractches, you get 1 or 2 bigger ones depending on how you moved while sliding...
Much better, believe me...

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
you dont get little scratches or one big scratch tho...
and not everyone has the gloves
its more like lose all of the muscle and skin on your left leg or you lose a little skin off both legs your arm and them your back
how bad were your injuries when you were going 50 and fell?.

Wel,, if someone does 50 with no gloves, then darwinism was just doing its job
And I didnt get much actually... Deep scar on my side, deep scar in my elbow, a few other small ones... Other than that, it was fine. I was actually looking behind me and hit a "turtle" on the road that I hadnt seen... It was a HUGE one that blocked my trucks right away... I flew.

If you don't have a pair of gloves you probably shouldn't be doing DH they are pretty much a necessity imo
If there's a hill....there is a way

dude not everyone has the money for that ####
so this is what you do instead. its not like ive never had to do some pretty extreme stuff bofore so i know what im talkin about. maybe if you have full racing leathers and slide gloves and a helmet you have other options
but if you dont all you can do is minimize the damage

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
slide pucks cost 10 dollars to make. dont tell me you cant afford a ten dollar pair of slide gloves but you can afford to access the internet to give dangerous advice and buy skateparts.
No disrespect dude, but i bomb at high speeds in a half shell and a set of gloves, and thats all you need to slide out safely.
you dont need leathers, you dont need crazy aero helmets, just slide pucks. they're cheap, they're easy to make.
if you roll at fast speeds, the centrifugal force from you rolling will rip your legs and arms away from your body causing you to flail. this in turn will cause you to lose control and break bones.

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
thats fine, just dont give out advice that would hurt people.
Im not trying to be a dick, im sure you have lots of experience, but rolling out at high speeds is not only dangerous, its stupid, and its also very bad advice.
if you dont want to use gloves, and want to roll out when you are going under 25 mph, thats dumb, but fine. but translating that to "try and roll out at any speed, its safer" is dumb, dangerous and wrong. if you dont believe me, go to a state with hills, get your ass up to 45 mph, and then fall off your board and see how rolling it out works for you.

~word~
I'd much rather slide on my pucks and kneepads and retain some sort of directional control.
_with exception to competition and mountains(leathers/fullface)_
You can always hammer-fist an assailant with your slide puck.
And it's not like someone's gonna jump you for a ratty-ass set of slide gloves. It'd more likely be your board...

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
I've gone down around 40 a couple times, and it's some scary ####. I've been VERY LUCKY that I sustained no serious injuries and my kneepads so the wear from it. I know what the best course of action is to do when I bail at ANY speed. put anything that isn't my skin on the road. that means of course slide pucks and shoes, as well as knee pads (I'd never do any kind of serious riding [30+] without them until I get leathers) but on top of that dickies are very abrasion resistant, as are leather belts, even my watch band has some road rash that would've otherwise gone onto my wrist.
please, if you haven't gone down at some kind of speed DON'T POST IN THIS THREAD.

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
I've wrecked in the mid thirties and couldn't bring my hands from tuck fast enough. I slid on my chest for nearly fifteen feet but the only thing that really saved me was my kneepads and dragging the sht out of my shoes.
My local spot is about the same speed and you slide into an island if you take it badly. Last saturday i wrecked and had to hop over the curb in the middle of sliding on my knees. Once again ~ kneepads. I just don't feel comfortable doing any sort of speed without them.

you gotta find something that works.
These are probably the single worst pieces of advice I've seen yet on silverfish, which is saying a lot because a lot of kooks spout out nonsense. Sorry if I've offended you all, but telling someone to do that is absolute bunk and is bound to hurt people.
If, say, bailing into grass was the best option (which it isn't), that limits you to only roads with areas with grass, and you will still get hurt regardless. Theres also no guarantee you'll make it into the grass as the forward momentum will still launch you... forward. If you're riding in front of people, bailing like that is rather unappreciated.
Despite its similarities to other sports, longboarding differs from snowboarding/surfing/short boards as it is a mostly front weight biased sport. Uncontrollable wobbles typically happen from the back truck, so weighting it more will only amplify the effect. Stiffening up, even a portion of your body, causes you to lock up with the board and throws off your balance. Of course you don't want to turn into absolute jelly, but relaxing will help you maintain balance. Footbreaking while wobbling is also a horrid idea. You're already off balance, board is wobbing, and you need to regain control; why would you want to throw yourself even further out of balance, and possibly rip your groin in half when you finally decide to bail? As stated before, rolling while going fast is a bad idea. If you can't hold a rolling position (which you'll likely hit your head while doing), you'll start to flail (which you'll definitely hit your head while doing). This results in road rash, broken bones, and possibly death (think - flailing into a guard rail). The best thing to do in my experience is to use your slide gloves and shoes and minimize damage. If you don't have slide gloves, make some or don't cry when you're missing skin. They aren't expensive and are one of the most important pieces you should wear.
Carving isn't always necessarily an option (no disrespect to those who advised it), especially if you're riding with other people. Suddenly carving can cause you to crash into another person, or into a car, or if there's gravel on the road your board may decide to wash out under you. Carving is certainly one way to get rid of them, but there are times when you simply cannot.
And I disagree with anyone who says that being a good rider will make it so that you'll never have wobbles. Everyone, even pros, get wobbles. Little things like pebbles or cats eyes and the such can cause your trucks to jerk a little and give you a bit of wobble. The trick is to know how to ride them out, not to clench your ass and bail.

-if you are bombing, you should have slide gloves and a helmet. when you bail, slide it out. get low, spread out like a star fish, use your shoes if you have no knee pads.
-if you think you can roll it out/run it out, find a real hill and taste some real speed. aint no one running out a ####up at 60 km/h
2. locking your self up at speed when you are wobbling is a great way to eat ####.
your board is oscillating, by fixing your position, you start to oscillate too. guess what happens next?
-get low, lean forward, relax by acknowledging that the wobbles are there because you are nervous and no other reason. keep your weight on your front, bend your knees, loosen up. also make sure your back truck is never looser than your front.
if you are still wobbling, you might need to get more comfortable with speed. if you make it out alive, try starting a little closer to the bottom until you are used to it.
Thank you for the experienced advice. This guy knows whats up.
