Re: The cure to speed wobbles
Dont grab your board to stop speed wobble.
Was drivig the shuttle on a run and the guy at the back started getting MAD death wobs at about 40mph, almost controlled it, then decided to grab the board and get low (not tucking, just double grabbing the board) and BOOM mad wobbles that threw him off the board...
Was some serious wobble
(on an evo with smokies... so on a side note, its not the board, its the rider)

True. It's all about the stabalizer muscles that most people NEVER use.

Also, its true what people say about it being all in your head... kinda.
Its a scientific fact that your balance becomes worse when you focus on it, and that you actually balance better when performing a secondary task like, reading... doing math...
It is for this reason that I always bring a sudoku with me in case of emergency.

If your getting wobbles, you may just be pushing yourself too hard. You're not comfortable with the run or whatever. So you let yourself think about balancing and preventing wobbles, rather than just enjoying the run.
Some things that may help...
Thin shoes that allow you to really feel the board, and keeping your head up so you can always see the horizon line, And if you're board just vibrates a lot, that could contribute as well. A lot of balance involves feedback from muscles, and vibrations can really screw with that.
As far as grabbing the board, that should help, but only if you can do it w/o looking down to see where you are putting your hand, etc. it would probably be easier to put your hand on your ankle or something. The reason this works isn't because you are actually steadying the board with your hand, but because your sense of touch provides a lot more information on what is going on. This probably works best w/o slidegloves.
Instead of focusing on the board, focus on where you are, and where you're heading. That will help you stay oriented. If you loose your orientation, you will die.

9 out of 10 instances of speed wobble are caused by alien interference.

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
I utilize this idea more in street skating
you can keep it that way. Rolling at high speed just makes everything more dangerous. When you wreck fast it's highly probable to be sliding first, unless you somehow become airborne. There have been so many times I've been bucked off by rocks and slid back onto the board.
everyone falls
falling is the only way to learn

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
i know how you feel about the wobbvles, ive had my fair share of crashes. but if you are wearing gloves deffinetley try and land on your hands and slide it out, for the speed wobbles jsut be able to control it with slow down slides or just foot breaking. just gotta learn what works for you

Lolz.
I loved speed wobbles on my smokies.
Not that much lean.
It felt like i was on one of those vibrating feet massager things.

Playing ice hockey like me helps.
It doesnt increase yer stability. But it sure helps with keeping your stabalizer muscles toned and in shape. The'll never get tired!

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
So do wide trucks and and long wheel base keep them the wobbles down ?

Re: The cure to speed wobbles
I don't know whether this has been brought to the table, but I find one of my best methods to keeping speed wobbles at bay is to keep the majority of my weight over the front of the board. The more weight you have on the back of your board, the more that back truck is affected by how much you lean. I've done some decently fast runs on loose setups, and the few times I got wobbles I just kept leaning forward and they went away.
In the case where you know you're about to eat it: learn to slide. The ability to bleed off speed whenever you need to is a wonderful thing. Carving helps prevent them in many cases, but it'll usually never make a bad case of the wobs go away.

I goes away with more riding, relaxing and leanning forward.I used to ride a 34 wheel base board and get wobbles, now I ride a 28 wheelbase board and go faster and I don't get wobble (of course a year of riding makes a lot of difference)
I drive every day by and she tries to seduce me,I can hear her sayin' "Draw pretty thane lines on my new black dress,go crazy on me, go sidewayz"

Haha. That made me crack up. Last Wednesday was my birthday and some of my buddies came over to drink and longboard. One of my friends has only ever ridden my extra board (Sector 9 Bomb Hills) once before. We were cruising down a hill at approximately 20mph when he started wobbling pretty bad. I knew he was gonna bail for sure but I was hoping he would find a way to ride it out. All of a sudden, he just dives off the front of the board. He got road rash pretty bad. He was basically alright though, and the image in my head of him diving off the front is pretty hilarious.
