    Talking Headlights on a skateboard

Well I feel really awesome right now, i made some headlights and taillights for my boards, it can be easily changed to any board and it only cost me 14$.

So i bought 2 of those camping head lamps that fit on the brim of a baseball hat. Then what i did was get a flat piece of plastic that would extend from the trucks forward so i could clip them on (kinda looks like a really flat riser that is extra long). Then I just drilled the holes to fit the trucks and now im all set for some night riding without the fear of getting run over by a prius. For the plastic i used an old DVD case.

Well that's that i suppose, i will try to get some pictures on here if i can find my camera. I don't know if anyone has ever tried it this way but maybe someone could even build on this design and make it even better.

interesting. sounds like fun idea. are the lights both a single color? doing a shuvit with them would probably look sick. next time you make more you will probably wanna use a stronger material then dvd case plastic. i break that crap all the time lol. when you can post a pic id love to see.

I think i might put on some red film of some sort on the rear ones, and once i have access to better tools i might just make a bracket out of metal

If you're serious about being seen by motorists, get a good reflective vest or at least a reflective sash (aka, Sam Brown belt). And as far as mounting those lights to your board, don't. Put them on your helmet so you can shine them where you're looking.

I've found that lights on the board help a lot with being spotted at night. Not so much for seeing your way though.

To be seen by cars, you need a reasonably powerful light that's going to be in the motorists' field of vision. Lights pointing down at the ground or up into the sky don't do much good unless you want to alert ground-dwelling insects or aliens from outer space. A light that allows you to tie your shoes in the dark isn't going to be powerful enough to be safe when you're rolling on skateboard at more than walking speed.

I commute by bicycle and have invested over $500 in lighting equipment. I see lots of people with anemic LED lights that barely do their job. A map-reading light will not help you be seen by motorists, especially if it's mounted down near the ground.

umm i'm not sure if you have your license, but as someone who does drive at night, it actually can STILL be hard to spot longboarders in the dark...

people aren't usually expecting to see a guy on a skateboard darting around, thats just a geuss though.

although if you pay attention well enough, you can work around cars to where they don't need to see you to avoid hitting you, although lights are still a better option IMO

I've been riding parallel but at a distance to a road at night and have been spotted enough times that cars (out of their line of sight) have slowed down to see what that light was. I don't doubt the utility of reflective tape or vests but lights do make me stick out. Motorists seem to be less ticked off when they see the lights and helmet at night.

No need to choose one or the other though. Both are cheap enough. Any of 'em would be better than nothing.

I love my lights though... just wish that it was stronger.
