is your dad fit? is he active? you can't expect anyone to sling their self on a skateboard, especially if they don't want to and skateboard because little jr. wants them to. But then, if you are used to getting your way.. just throw a tantrum and see how far you can go. capiche?
why do you skate?
i skate because like it.

Going down hills keeps you young or at least pretty damn alert for a few minutes and walking back up the hill is great aerobic exercise that isn't too hard on the leg joints.

My driver's license says I'm old, but my brain doesn't. Either I don't believe I'm old because I do fun stuff like skating, or I do fun stuff like skating because I don't believe I'm old. I'm really not sure which, but either way, I'm having fun instead of wishing I wasn't so damn old.
I do know that I look ten years younger than most of the guys I graduated highschool with, and can now outrun most of the guys who were on the football/baseball/track team. And I don't pay for a gym membership, have never spoken to a personal trainer, and have never been on a diet. I drink beer and eat chicken-fried steak with gravy and still weigh the same as I did when I graduated. I smile a lot. My skateboard costs a ton less than golf clubs, a sports car, or pretty much any other standard "old guy" hobby.

Why are you reading my sig? It's boring.

I'm 56 and still rippin. People come up to watch and then see my gray beard. They often say, "I thought you were a teenager."
I'm a land-locked surfer (20 years now). Started riding mountain boards 3 years ago. Started custom rigging them for extreme High-G street-carving 2.5 years ago.
You grow old when you stop having fun.

The question is not why, but why not!
Skating definitely keeps you young. The aerobic excersise is great and instead of doing crossword puzzles, he can keep his mind alert by dodging obstacles in the road!

Note to zgadow20's dad: The main reason you should start longboarding is because your son wants you to. I know you don't want to miss the opportunity to do things with him that would mean a lot to him.
Take it from me, another 'old' guy, you're going to love it.

Re: Looking for old guys who can relate, +35
I'm in the 54 zone. kewl age to be now since I was born in '54 and I'm 54 must mean something if not, just a coinky dinks in numbers.
one of the biggest problems in America is greed. American FAT is running rampant. Life expectancy for most Americans is less than most countries around the planet.
Why?
Because yanks are known to have diets that lead them to an earlier grave. Americans are becoming more watchers than doers. The fight for HDTV is an indication that people are getting sofa spud butts and coach potato bodies in epidemic proportions.
The solution?
Longboarding as an option can help you transcend the conventional sports. It's a new-world type of exercise movement...
Fast foods, sloppy sleeping habits and quite frankly curious styles of living where the lack of community is the norm is leading to some kind of creepy society decadence that we are all trying to get a handle on.
JUST DO IT! SK8! SPREAD THE STOKE!

Congrats Salad...
I skate because I like to if I didn't I wouldn't. Yes it can be exercise and I have been known to let my friends know that when they get that your too old to skate look. So, my friends think I skate for exercise while I'm just playing and having fun.

Just let me know when you're coming out. I usually get together with a group of skaters every Sunday morning, and ride around the lakefront, soldier field, and the museum campus.
I am Ralph Kinzel and I believe I knew your parents.....I bought several bikes from the CCC shop for my own kids,,,,
IF your parents were Barb and Julian I have found who I was looking for!
I knew Julian for around fifty years and would like to get in touch with his brothers Neil & Dennis and their mother Gwen if she is still alive.
Any info you feel free to give me will be much appreciated!

Re: Looking for old guys who can relate, +35
Also the other day I was on my board with the dog running along side another old guy was going to crap on me for being in the way, you should have seen his reaction when I took off the helmet he backed off really quick when he saw that I was probably his age or more. Unfortunately skateboarders have a questionable profile
