I may not work there anymore, but it's still my school.
And yeah, TimeShip has some great info. Go there; it's run by another crusty fart.
Speaking of gloves...how are the Timeship Bear Paws?

um...very sorry.
I'm gonna warn you, don't look at the gloves thread where I got that
picture. There is one that is far worse, a whole hand mangled like that.
I only posted it here to emphasize the need for gloves.
So many people don't wear them, particularly in the summer.
I've landed (and seen too many people land) on my hands and and
scraped them up too many times not to warn a new old skater.
Didn't wan't to make anybody quesy, sorry.
Ditto for me, sorry!!! but having worked in an ER and being able to see first hand (no pun intended) the damage from not wearing gloves, i felt the need to re-inforce the WEAR GLOVES mantra in the gloves thread (Speedboarding)

Hip pads, Nothing worse than nailing the hip on pavementI was at BC Sports and saw some awesome pads in the snow board dept. They have the regular pads inside but on the outside they had the hard plastic caps like knee pads on all the points, hips and tail bone area.
If they make a protective pad for some spot on your body, GET IT. When I am back on a board in a few months I will be getting the mnt bike shoulder pads as well, a lot of the slalom guys are into that now. Not hard to launch on to a shoulder. My son wears them now and he has really stepped up his riding. He just knows it is a matter of time before he take a digger and he now skates with confidence. Also makes dad breath a bit easier See picture
Hmm, another idea if you want hip pads might be a football girdle and pad set.
Those have hip and tailbone pads inside, and they're light and slim, you could easily fit them under a pair of shorts.

what a great thread...
skateboarding keeps you young...of that, there is no doubt
what's interesting is that after 1990 or so, skateboarding took a direction that left many scratching their heads....I often wonder what would have happened had we had the full force of the internet and some of the longboard companies doing their thing...
but things take time...and I am a great believer that things happen for a reason.
of course, the more people figure out that they should return to skateboarding or get into it, the better skateboarding will be.
welcome back...it's good to have you on board
cheers

I turn 45 today and I am so glad I found my way back to skateboarding again after all these years. I most likely would not have if it had not been for a friend telling me about Gravity and Sector 9. He told me about the Long boards being made and that is all it took, I was BACK! now I am addicted to the feeling of buying a board and the rush of setting it up and testing it out. I have 2 used roes on the way this week and am so stoked. Have not felt so alive since i I was a kid.
Long live SKATEBOARDING!!!!!!!!!!!

Right there with you guys. However, I may be the young whipper snapper of the old guy's club at just 33. Thing is, the guys I skate with are all considerably younger than I am, so I'm made to know my age frequently
I agree on the safety gear though - I often skate with my 11 year old son who always wears his helmet while riding because I set that example for him. I even heard him get on a couple of his buddies because they were not wearing lids. So proud
Anyway, I skated quite a bit as a younger kid as well as surfed, and just recently got back into skating 5-6 years ago. Believe it or not, my first time back on a board since about the age of 16 was when one of my buddies convinced me to go to the Vans skatepark with him in Houston. Haven't looked back since, and all of my rides are getting longer and longer with each purchase.
Speaking of which, those of you with access to great skateparks - don't take that for granted. Being jammed up on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean makes you really appreciate what you had back home (or in any other form of actual civilization) Skate that concrete hard, fellas. Our kids and their friends are looking to us to show them the way. Teach them that skating isn't just ollies, kickflips, and handrails.
Spreading the stoke from way out here, guys.

out skategeezer's feedback page. I believe that these stories led in part
to the creation of Concrete Wave magazine (?).
Very fun reading for those who remember the early days of skating.....

40, rediscovered it, must admit, thanks to Tony Hawk's pro skater games... I wear a Giro snowboard helmet now.. buying Lush 2nd gen gloves real soon to replace my half fingered wrist protectors.
When I was 14 I could fall, never hit my elbows (well in the halfpipe i did) or knees, and lots of fall trainig came after that. So no knee and elbow when I cruise which is what I mostly do. It is a really good idea to practise some falls, judo rolls and stuff.
I have bruised a finger, a palm and also bruised my shins, But I know people who died falling on concrete, saw a kid die from a bike fall, and Im wearing the helmet. Same in the snow.
And it looks cool.

After testing several brands, I settled on Crash Pads http://www.mountainboarder.com/crashpads.html
There pricey, but have worked well for snowboarding and DH mountainbike too. Very good protection and quality. Haven't had a problem fitting them under jeans, shorts ect.

So cool to hear so many people with a similar story to tell.
When the world of skateboards turned into the world of pop"sick"ill sticks in the early ninties I think alot of people turned away from skateboarding because it was starting to get too focused on the kickflip skool of lameness.
I think it`s up to us as longboarders to show the world the true meaning of skateboarding. Riding..........
Anyway, back on topic, I`m now teaching a guy who`s never been on a skateboard in his life, he`s been trying to snowboard and I convinced him that he could learn lots of associated skills on a longboard. After his first night he couldn`t stop raving about how fantastic it was.
He is 43 years young! 8)

Pretty much bombproof. They're hot in the Summer, but going down at speed is a lot safer. You can use them like kneepads and just slide away from a spill. And you never worry about putting down an outrigger.

Just turned 34 on Monday. Never owned a skateboard in my life until this past Christmas! I've fooled around with friends boards and as a kid in the 70's I remember those plastic yellow banana boards. I think I may have even bought a clay wheeled skateboard from a yard sale that was unrideable. When the 80's hit and everyone was into Christian Hosoi and Vision skateboards, I was more into the freestyle BMX scene, and soon sports took over. When I told my wife I wanted a skateboard to compliment surfing, she was laughed. She still can't take it seriously as if it's embarrassing for someone my age to skate. She still associates skating to juvenile delinquints or something.
