I had a conversation with some reletively new aquatinces recently.
The conversation got around to leisure activities, hobbies and sports.
I told my new friends that I longboard. And they said oh, you surf.
Um, yeah well I was actually talking about longboard skateboarding.
Huh? You skateboard? How high can you ollie? Aren't you a little old for that?
Yeah well longboarding is a little different. And I have a disease that makes me look older than my actual age. I'm 16.

Just a little FYI
Not all insurance companies will pay claims for 40 year old guys who willingly hurt themselves. It happened at one of our races and the guy got stuck with the bill.
Next race, guy goes to emergency room in a skateboard t shirt and all his pads and tells them he tripped on the stairs

Yeah I've heard that too. It's sad that you have to be "dishonest" and that's not really the right term but the proper one doesn't come to mind.
"I was painting the house and fell off the ladder" or something. Kind of reminds me of how the actual is way better than the perceived. I'm a firefighter and I remember when I first started out. I was cooking that day and someone came in and gave me a cigar (new baby or something) and since I was cooking I bent over the stove to light it. Well we have those old commercial gas stoves and when I did it flashed up. I kind of heard a little sizzle but didn't think anything more about it. The next day I go home and my roommate asked if I had a big fire. Nope why? Well all your eyebrows are gone.
Should've just said yeah it was huge second alarm and left it at that.

Re: Looking for old guys who can relate, +35
nice to know there are so many...
37yrs here, will be 38 in Oct.
I skated lots of ditches, streets, home made ramps and backyard half-pipes in the 80s - then stopped until last year when I finally bought a longboard - wish I'd have gotten one years ago...
I got the first broken bone of my life in the first week of having my longboard (see the included xray). no pads (I know), wasn't even going very fast, just fell wrong/goofy - landed on my palms with my left elbow -locked- and snap... ouch...
What's crazy, to me, is that I've been rockclimbing for 15 years, doing crosscountry mountain biking for 12 years, downhill mountain biking for 6 years, and have busted my ass plenty without any real/major injuries - but noooooooooooooooo, I go and break my -elbow- in the first week of -skateboarding- at 37 years old.
I got lots of #### from family, friends, and co-workers - but I'm not about to be whipped by a piece of wood with wheels - and after a few months of recovery am back at it again and already better than before.
This -is- living...

Welcome to the fish. That's a bummer to bust your elbow right away like that!
I'm not in the 35 and over group just yet, but I'm damn close.

Thanks guys for making me feel young. I am only thirty, but I work at a university so I'm surrounded by 18-22 year olds. This thread helps keep things in perspective. Go Old Dudes (and chicks)!. This is my first post by the way. What a cool forum.

Doc reckons there are three ages to a person..their chronological age, their physical age and their mental age, and they don't always match. I think this is very true.

48, 100, 15
By the way, I busted the same bone in my first week on my first longboard (Carveboard) 3-4 years ago.
Arm is still totally crooked and can't straighten but who gives a crap.

Re: Looking for old guys who can relate, +35
I'm 50 this year. Started skating in the early 70's and gave it up in 76 or there abouts. Started again last year and really enjoying it. Shame there don't seem too be many other old fools like me in the area.
I agree heartily with the earlier comments about starting your first runs a bit lower down the hill. I have a long slopy drive and early on I windmilled out onto the road in full view of my wife and her mother. It could have been a complete disaster but now just provides entertainment for family and friends when the story gets retold.
But right now I'm just enjoying the cruising with the wind blowing through whats left of my hair.

Re: Looking for old guys who can relate, +35
I turned 42 yesterday and I'm skating better than ever! Started in 76' stopped in 81, started again in 87' stopped in 90' started again in 03' and won't quit unless I can't walk anymore. When I started again in 03' I couldn't even drop in a small bowl anymore. Now I'm skating vert, making frontside airs and working on my inverts! All of the new skateparks are heaven and I'm old enough to drive myself!!!
In December I bought a Sk8 Kings Freestyle board and I'm having a blast relearning all of my old flatland tricks. I already have several kickflip variations, 50/50's, shuv its, and nose wheelies wired again. I'm also up to eleven 360's and increasing my numbers all the time! The freestyle is giving me a sense of balance and confidence on my board that I haven't felt since I was 16. Slalom is my next adventure!
Advice: Wear pads, stretch, warm up, start gradually, skate everyday possible, enjoy all of the new skateparks, HAVE FUN and amaze the kids with your old skool tricks!!!

Re: Looking for old guys who can relate, +35
After joining this forum never felt the need to post to topics yet.
This topic however is something I would like to add my personal story to.
I'm 46 and started skateboarding last summer together with my 6 year old son.
Normally I'm a windsurfer and a longboarder and my little one teased me that he was better at the skateboard than me. I couldn't resist the challenge......
A few weeks later I bought my first skateboard ever and am addicted to it.
I leave it in the car and sometimes I ride it at work in the parking. Imagine; 46, suite, shirt and tie and skateboarding during lunch....

Anyway, looking for old guys like my self for advice and imput on getting better at longboarding.
Thanks

I suggest padding up as much as possible so you won't be afraid to go for it! Get out there every weekend & anytime you can during the week after work.
I skate everyday during lunch & every weekend. I bought a padded vest from Skeletools--- I am fearless now!
The more you skate, the better you get!
39-- you're a baby!!! Now quit your whining & skate!
