Biggest problem is that in Alaska - not too much is flat. There's one long stretch of straight-away on the highway right along-side the military base that's fairly flat though, I think it may be a mile, it'd be close. There's a bike path along there that could possibly work.
James' time is damned impressive! Do note that the top slot still belongs to Derek Munson at 3:33, who went to school on scholarship for his X-country running skills. It's seriously tough to maintain that clip.
Thing is, this course does not actually require a "flat mile" -- what it does require is ensuring your times are measured as flat, by skating your chosen mile in both directions. So actually, the average of two miles. Believe me it's hard enough finding 174 feet of flat anywhere, as we've learned by timing regulation cyber slalom in various places. So as long as you can find an uninterrupted mile i.e,. without intersections, you should be golden!

Yeah, I guess that is true.
There's a bike trail that runs from my town, into the main town from where I live, about 15 miles, all completely uninterrupted by bike trails, so I guess it would just be finding the best section of it to use.
I need a new idea for a sig.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
this is more like it.
A few of us ( myself, bam bam and Ben Hall) in the UK are starting a long distance skating association and the mile race and marathon will be part of the events we are looking into.
we will be organising lots of different types of event here ( road races, orienteering, that type of thing) and setting up a website with info on about distance skating. an official record attempt would be cool
also looking at equipment use for skaters. the rolls with 97's doesn't cut it, too much effort in getting the wheels up to speed, and the rolls is harldly aero!
what wheels? big zigs?
areo helmet?
nutrition for marathons, salt tablets and gels etc
pushing v pumping
very interested in this, atteneded the first ever distance race in nz last month, would be interesting to see how fast the uk boys can get
any kind of advice nat@skatenewzealand.com

right on nat!! point 2 might keep your rolls setup in the game: up to the start you have unlimited pushes, so getting the wheels up to speed can all happen before the clock starts...
==================================================
1. One mile, as flat as possible. Skate the same one mile distance two times, once in each direction; the average will be calculated. The two runs should be skated on the same day, but rest time in between is otherwise unlimited.
Alternatively, if a FLAT oval / circular running track is available, such that the start and finish line are the same, it can be skated in one direction.
2. Unlimited flatland start, pushing or pumping. From start line to finish, either pump the entire length, push, or combine pushing and pumping.
3. Time starts when board crosses the Start Line.
4. Time stops when board reaches Finish line.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
not riding my rolls, snapped it. currently on the demonseed i skated across nz.
im a pusher, we just dont have the long paths in the uk to get my ldp sorted .i dont suppose it will take much tweaking from my slalom technique
looking into all different decks at the mo, as part of our research for the organisation.
you seen the lbl one? looks like a contender for a pushing board. the new faltown one could be too. then theres the subsonic.... sheesh
im up for this 24 hour thing that dave is organising, we would like to be involved in some way.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
I just love that this post won't die. Many thanks to all those who don't think of this as a joke.
I just noticed that I posted this when I was 37. It is now two years later and there appears to be an official record. Way to go Derek...Mr. 3:33.
20mph for 3 minutes under your own power gets dangerous. I believe you are much more likely to fall while trying to push or pump a deck at 20 mph rather than while simply steering a deck down a hill (thanks to gravity) at 20+. Add to this that after a minute or so, fatigue really starts to set in.
But the fact that this may be possible is just the reason that this post won't die.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
thank you Mark - for making this thread!
i just heard from Derek tonight in fact, and he's up for another run at it soon.
and on the Eastside forum we're talking about possibly trying to coordinate a trip to the Redmond velodrome May 10th, the same day as Shane's Seattle push race, since a lot of "distance guys" are going to be here already, up from Portland. plans are still all up in the air, but just to see guys thinking through their setups and race strategies for real, its a cool thing.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
Just think, you may have started a new breed of longboarding. in four or five years (maybe even less), people will be famous for flat ground pushing only races. They will have aero helmets and leathers for these flat ground pushing only races. Silverfish will be scattered with threads saying: "what wheels are best for pushing the dervish?" "What board is best for high speed pushing (haha)?" "What is the best GPS for pushing?"
THIS POST IS MEANT AS A JOKE.

It's happening already! Believe me, it will be less than that. Pushing specific boards, kit reviews, locations, events and racers.

Some interesting points in the sarcasm, actually...
What's really up in the air, is how push-only (and pump only) events will evolve, compared to the typical "cross-city" race which typically includes elevation drops. It's good to see DH taking off and all the drop decks up on the hills-- because once they're done with the high speed turns, they already have the perfect set up for a flatland marathon, and a growing percentage of those guys have the stamina for it. The rest is just mental.
Aero helmets and leathers, not-- but given the conditions of this upcoming weekend's ultraskate (likely wet and cold) do expect to see some materials of the petroleum persuasion... a.k.a. the Anti-Christ fabric of skateboarding
There's already some guys who've been recognized locally. Not sure that's 'fame' but they definitely have my respect:
Robin McGuirk, has won every Portland Pusher series (2003 to present) until this year.
Derek Munson who completed a no-touch, pump-only 25-mile race in one of the Seattle flatland marathon races (2004 to present)
I recently met a marathon runner at Greenlake as he was prepping to run -- and after finding out he "used to" skate, asked if he simply wanted to go almost twice as fast and twice as far, with the same amount of effort as his run. He'll stop by at the ultraskate this Saturday with a board

Re: The 3 minute mile.
I skated about 2+ miles home uphill with a backpack in 10 minutes... and I'm not really athletic, so it should be possible.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
I'm gonna definitely try this out. Florida is synonymous with flat and I've got the Cady Way Trail which is 20+ miles of flat with accurately marked miles. Ill try it with my poop board then once my thighs stop burning or when I get my nemesis I'll try it again.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
You can probably equip a longboard with 110mm wheels at a high duro on a very very smooth surface. Minimum friction drag.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
I'm going to give the mile a shot at an old paved track near my school. Probably won't be anything impressive but it's worth a try. I just wish I still had my rolls rolls with the tall skinny wheels.
