Re: The 3 minute mile.
Thinking about ice (and inline, and roller) skating, as compared to pushing and pumping...
With ice skating your pushing foot is actually moving forward at the same time as it's pushing, as opposed to pushing a skateboard, where your pushing foot remains stationary while it's touching the ground. This limits pushing speed on flat ground to roughly the speed you can move your leg at.
Whereas pumping is actually very similar to ice skating, your whole body essentially acting as one leg alternating side to side. If you're familiar with ice skating, you probably have tried or seen skating standing on one skate by pumping side to side, (or also with two legs, in both cases the skates never leaving the ice, tracing a wavy line).
Seems like the main reason that pushing will never beat pumping's record times.
Maybe it's also a useful analogy for some, to understand better how pumping works.

i disagree with this,
kickscooter have fast mile times..
the hard part is finding strong skate pusher that can power push with both legs...

Derek Munson's 2006 record is currently as official as it gets, timed with stopwatch and redundant GPS system, on a 1/4-mile parking lot next to the Velodrome. 3:33 still stands as the official top time.
Ian and Greg who are currently climbing the ladder, have been doing their attempts on a 1/4-mile loop track as well, and are witness to each other's records. The loop track is really the most reliable format.
We plan to hold an event in the Redmond Velodrome (Seattle WA area) late this summer, and depending on interest I'll coordinate with Guinness and make the attempt official in that sense, as I've jumped through their hoops before. Video of the full loop track attempt would likely be required for "remote" proof. A trakmate timing system with start and stop strips would be the most reliable timing system down to the 1/100ths sec.
For a prize, Derek got a cookie.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
I'm probably gonna do this over the summer while i'm still in shape from track, if I can hit 6:10 for the mile running (which sucks but i'm a sprinter so I run the mile once a year), I wonder what I can hit on a longboard.

I'm not dead set on that theory or anything, but it seems like ~3:20 for kickscooting is slow compared to 2:07 for inline(1500m).
and I agree that strong switch skills would be a requirement.
You all should consider making top speed sprint attempts as well, if the measuring equipment can easily handle both. Curious what those numbers are like, as they would more directly reflect the limitations of what a pushing leg can do.
There's definitely some equation where the faster you're going the less force you can exert with a single push.
Can't help but imagine top speed attempts in a vacuum/with no friction. Cue 80's speedskating on Saturns rings fantasy deck graphix..

Re: The 3 minute mile.
both pushing and pumping are way inefficient compared to inline...

if a skateboarder's goal is to beat an inliner, time to strap on the 'boots fellas
the kickscooter is a far closer comparison, and even that contraption seems to have some efficiency advantages.

what if I add a stick/handle bar to my skateboard?
cheating?

Re: The 3 minute mile.
I wonder if Chris Yandall could get close to a 3:30 mile while skogging. It seems like combining running and skating would achieve the best results.
Maybe it's time to get Boaz Cheboiywo (champion Kenyan runner currently residing in Michigan) on a longboard. I am sure he could hit a 3 minute mile while skating.

Re: The 3 minute mile.
If I find a road that is flat and straight for 1 mile long I will attempt.
Better find that road.

Forget attaching it..
Use it as a push rod.. and use all your core muscles, aternating in a rhythmic fashion, so that every movement is translated into propulsion
