Interesting riding day..
SO...I was carving down a neighborhood hill and I'm thinkin, I'm kinda hungry. I try to do some crossstepping, emphasis on "try", almost fall and pull into a somewhat nice heelside carve, I'm getting pretty close to traffic, so I jump off my board and get ready to cross this rather long, busy, 4 lane street. I'm waiting for all these cars to pass and this last car, an old red honda civic hatch, with a bunch of kids, probably 16, 17ish, roll down their windows and yell "FAAAAAAAAAAGGGG!!!! LONGBOARDS SUCKKKK", man did I feel like bustin' my board on one of those guys' heads that were stickin out.
Sooooooo, anybody else have a similar discrimination problem? Anyways, I still got me some chicken and pizza

Re: Interesting riding day..
I also get very hungry from longboarding. But yea people give me dirty ass looks when I am riding on my board. There was a guy in a construction vehicle and I stood there for aobut a minute waiting for him to pass (the courtious thing to do right?) and when he passed me he shook his head at me. Horizontilly like I was an idiot. I was sure pissed off.

Re: Interesting riding day..
I get a ceartain amount of dirty looks from just about everybody. however, the second somebody gives me a compliment or a smile it makes up for every bad look ive gotten that day. Today i had an old guy in a truck give me a thumbs up. Made me feel good for sure

Re: Interesting riding day..
Yeah I find it pretty interesting how people treat you. I really don't give a crap what they think, but it's still interesting anyway.
Some people are really cool with it. Often I go into a shop and the attendant will be saying how cool my longboard is, asking questions etc.
Other people are just bitches about it. E.g. coming home on the train from uni. I'm sitting in the window seat, a woman is sitting in the aisle seat. When I get up to get off at my station, she says in a really hostile tone (knowing she's gotta stand up so I can get out of my seat) "You're getting off here?!". "Yeah" and I almost added ", if that's ok with you..." after it :P

Re: Interesting riding day..
Yeah I've had people yell #### at me or honk but for the most part people are more intrigued by my board. Yesterday I actually got a ride in a cop car up to the top of the hill.

The only people that I get compliments from are when ladies want to know where they "can get one, my son would absolutely love it.

Heh, at least he knew what it is. I've had kids call it a "rollerboard" before. WTF is a rollerboard?

Re: Interesting riding day..
I use my 55" cruiser for transportation sometimes. The grocery store is just 6 blocks away. If all I need is a loaf of bread or something like that, I take the cruiser. As I carry it throught the grocery store people seem mostly to think it's pretty cool - even the teen bag-boys (sorry if that term is not politically correct). But maybe it's just because of my age.
I don't get in any trouble on the road, but I am really respectful of drivers. Again - prolly because I'm a geezer and us old guys think about stuff like that.

Re: Interesting riding day..
I remember my buddy and I were walking up a hill (North Mountain Ave.) Some guy in a SUV pulls next to us and says "Oh That's smart" shakes his head and proceeds driving. It was pretty funny. Oh and right after that a cop showed up telling us that skating down hills in that area was illegal! WTF?

Re: Interesting riding day..
I've had lots of interesting experiences. The reality is some people are gonna be jerks no matter what. I was riding my bike with a friend (and he is 38) down in SE Portland, a very bike-rich part of a VERY bike-rich city, and we are riding in the street of course since it is only two lanes and some moron passes us on the left and yells "get out of the road!!" No, sir, you should be the one that gets out of the road, at least until you learn some basic traffic laws...
A couple weeks ago I was cruisin with a buddy downtown and two guys yelled as we went by (I wasn't really looking their direction but we went right by them) "yeahhhh longboards!!!" And then I threw down a nice long footbreak and they caught up with us and talked for a bit. Then a cop came over and made us show id cause he was looking for some goth kid who ran from them.
I take my board into work with me and I work at Central Precinct of PDX Police so I get wierd looks sometimes. Plus I can dress in shorts and a t-shirt so I don't really look like I belong there. Whatever, I just take care of my own and they can freak out if they want.

Re: Interesting riding day..
I get alot of dirty looks from the old folks...but most people are pretty chill. I also think it really helps to give them a quick greeting like Hi or Good Morning, or something like that.

Re: Interesting riding day..
I forgot to mention it was really cool last night because I was chillin down on the waterfront with a cigar and my board and people kept shooting me dirty looks (especially these bitches with their boyfriends walking along) and then I grinned at a guy who was lookin at me and he came over, obviously a little tipsy and he started asking about my board, told me about how he used to ride a 48-incher and bombed it down from OHSU to downtown and stuff and how he wishes he could still skate but he's too old (he said like 37 or something... I wanted to tell him to get back up on that horse!). It was really cool.
