Default What brought you to longboarding?

I've been reading the posts lately and it got me wondering which path everyone took that got them into longboarding. I came in through skateboarding(shortboarding I guess you could say although that doesn't seem quite right since in the 80's things were different then they are now concerning shortboarding(great run on sentence)).

I wanted to make an homemade skateboard, searched it on Google, and somehow HughR's site appeared. That inspired me to make a longboard.

uhh... iplayed around on my uncles old-school boards some... and me and my friend when she used to live across the street from me used used to both sit on it and butt-board down some hills... then i started to stand up, and asked my dad for one... which got him back in to it...

I came to longboarding because i felt like something new.
I still shortboard, but at the time I thought "why not."

I think Surfing could have been put on the options, altho it was shortboarding for me.

I wanted to make my own shortboard at one point, and found the Toothless website instead

i wanted to carve the concrete wave because real ones are a lot tougher. not a bad cross-train for surfing, good for balance on a big longboard

    was sick of walking
The sage, Longboard Buddha once said, "A tree spends 100% of its lifetime in a static environment and only after its reincarnation as a deck is it allowed to move at fast speeds...
when allowed, the wood will give thankless service if
    allowed to flow."

my girlfriend told me to try it, even though i didnt surf (want to learn but dont live anywhere near the ocean, and ive only seen it once), i dont snowboard (i ski instead but i have snowboarded a few times), and i was never able to ride a shortboard well... i didnt like how small they were cause of the size of my feet... so she told me about longboards and that they were easier to learn and fun to ride, so i checked out ebay and bought an Original 47 Freeride and I've been hooked ever since.

was into surfing (and a little bit of shortboarding...never got real good though), saw a Sector 9 in a magazine when i was like 13-14yrs old, my parents got me a gift certificate to a local shop for my birthday and i got me a board. road it, got bored with cruising and took it to another level, then started getting good and realized that longboarding was actually more of an organized 'sport' than i thought it was. got off the S9's and crappy trucks i was used to riding (went through 3 S9's...and i still got love for them), got better stuff, got way better, and still skate just as hard as i did when i started. it's something i've always had a passion for and loved to do, i couldn't see me without longboarding...i just wouldn't be me without it.
from the heaven i\'ve had, and the hell i\'ve been through... i\'m always comin\' back home to you.

Same here, pretty much. I live about 2 hrs from the nearest coast but do enjoy a bit of a surf every now and then. I now consider myself a skater who sometimes surfs though.

First, they drug me to the Bear, then they handed me a pintail. The rest, as they say, is history.

after shortboarding for 18yrs and getting sick of riding the same crappy park and hitting the same crappy ledges and rails it was time for a change.
Slalom aaahh fresh air of skateboarding. It was like I was 10yrs old and on my first board again. So learning and looking for slalom sites you end up seeing longboarding sites as it seems if you slalom you most likely own a longboard. Some of the local guys had some longboards but not much. gravity mini carve a few surf ones and 1 big red x, and of course my wife had a 36" comet that I loved. boom I really feel like its skateboarding again.

Back in the days of being a skater kid and grinding up shopping centers and pissing people off (oh what great memories  ) Someone once wrote "skate or die" so I just have to keep skating because I'm young and not ready to die yet!

Besides the fact that I like all types of skating and I've done some longboard surfing ...cruising and carving is just so damn fun. Also these days when I meet other skateboarders they usually ride longboards unless they're 13 wearing a BAM shirt. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just not my thing.
