    Default Are ya havin fun?

    Warning. Long wended rant.

Went to a contest this weekend that my friends shop was hosting. Mostly shortboard stuff. I noticed that most of those kids didn't seem to be having fun. But it didn't sink in until the next day when I was out skating with one of my buds and we decided to hit the skatepark. We get to the park and everyone looks ticked off. It's a nice day, These guys are young and skating. They should be happy and having a good time but instead they just looked mad. My bud and I are skating around having a blast. Laughing and having fun. Everyone just glares at us like we're laughing during a funeral. Those guys are throwing their boards and cussing. While we are just having fun. So why do it if your not having fun? Shortboarding has gotten way to serious. Those guys are stressing out over nothing. All the longboarders are just smiling and laughing while we skate. We're having fun. Why aren't they? Are you having fun?

    i always have fun.
i've admitted that i dont spend any where near as much time on my board as i used to, but every second i do its the best second of my life.
even when i hit the floor.

I always found it frustrating to practice a trick all day. It's more like work. Yeah you can land them eventually with enough practice. But it's nerve racking when you're having a bad day.. it happens.

I know exactly what you're talking about, i only really skate with older guys who longboard and i have a blast big smile all day long whereas all my friends break their arse's trying to flip however many stairs, while im busting out 15 foot coleman slides.
    Tricks are for kids.
Lets hit those hills, lets slide the **** out of them, then lets do it again.

I have noticed more people into "old school" style skating. There was one kid out at the park with one of the old school Cab reissues and he was doing slides and just flowing and having fun. At the contest they had an old school division. Most of the contestants were under 15. So maybe people are getting tired of the serious stressful trick factory skating. Maybe it will all swing back to a more laid back "let's have fun" mind set. Or not. Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur. Outlived my usefulness and am waiting for some young buck to put me down for good. Or not. I'm having fun. It may tick some guys off that I don't take my skating as serious as they do but I'm having fun.

stop me if i'm wrong, but I think ttechnical tricks can be fun as well
sorry but I can't imagine rodney mullen not having fun while doing his ballet like freestyle tricks... it all looks so damn cool, and it must give the guy a blast, atleast, that's what I think. it's not the tricks that make skating less fun ( for me they do, but that's because I'm just not able to control my body to do an ollie) but the reason kids want to learn the tricks
if these kids went longboarding they wouldn't have fun as well, even in mellow carving!! why? because they are doing it to look cool, and not just for the sake of it! I know 2 little kiddos ( 10& 14 years old) who skate all day, everyday! and sure ass hell they have fun! why? because they skate for skating, not for looking cool! once I saw the younger kid trying some new flip trick he wanted to learn. he tried for like an hour or so, always smile onhis face, cause he was outside and he was skating, and he was almost nailing the trick! RESPECT for him, for not just giving up after 1 try... ( as I would have) it's what life is about, keep on trying...
    ok
    enough bullshyte...
what I meant to say is: skate for the sake of skating, not for the sake of being cool, and the fun will come!
It\'s nice to be important, But its more important to be nice

yeah most shortboarders really just do it to look cool... and their skater brand and bam clothing makes people think "oooh hes a skater, hes cool"
most of those shortboarders are trying to beat their friends at kickflippy stuff, and it pisses them off when they dont get it right or get beat...
its mostly the kids that do that, becuase all the adults that skate wouldnt be skating if it wasnt so fun...
another thing that pisses me off are those little skatepark whores that dress up all slutted up "skater" and just wait around for guys to talk to them because their "skater girls"... i mean its one thing if a girl goes there with their boyfriend... but goddamnit the skate-hoes look at me like im crazy, probably becuase im doing something theyre to scared to try or dont have have the "balls" to go out and do what im doing...
**** it; i go to the skatepark to skate; not to flirt; and if i fall, i fall with a ******* smile on my face.
all the kiddies laugh at you for riding old-school boards becuase your different, but their a group of little kick-flipping ****ers that dont know skating is about having fun.

...but im still just 13 about to be 14 so i shouldnt be talking...

...oh and sorry if i pissed anyone off, i just get all worked up about stuff...

... and yes, i am having fun...

Good for you Red. Don't let those skate bettys give you any guff. Anyway all the guys want a girl they can skate with not just watch them. Ask around. Every one is all jealous of Frank 'cause his wife skates and is hot. Skate chics over skate bettys anyday.

you go ASRS!! You are a true skater, because you really feel what it's all about. Don't mind the skate hoes, they'll have another interest next year.

    AIN'T THAT THE FREAKIN' TRUTH.

I can identify with you 100%.

It's pretty much the same in snowboarding...stupid girls coming to the hill, dressed up all "cute", and end up sitting on their asses all day, just trying to attract boys. They can dress the part, looking like what they see in magazine ads, but 90% of them can hardly make it down the hill without falling at least 10 times. Strangely enough, this somehow makes them more attractive to the boys, because this gives the boys an excuse to go over to the pathetic girls and "help" them and impress them.

If you're gonna spend time to get out, don't be wasting and taking up space where I could be RIDING and actually be HAVING FUN.

Oh yeah, I'm also having fun longboarding. Tried my first "hills" yesterday. 8) Chicago has this amazing area near the museum campus, where there are all these wiiiiiide, nicely paved, inclined paths that are PERFECT for bombing.

Girls that "hang out" and dress the part are not attractive to skaters. You want to hook up then you better be throwin down. My whips my ass runnin cones how could I possibly not propose?

hey, are they always in hottopic clothes with one chuck and one old-school adida with a bunch of those jelly bracelets? or something like that? they are here... well, in atlanta where all the concrete is...

oh and what also makes me mad is when these little kids play hide-and-seek in the bowl and throw french fries at you and lose their toys from mcdonalds and make you go get them... do you get them too?

and they bmxicans that get in there and kill the coping and if you run into one, or they run into you, its not exactly pretty... never happened to me, fortunatly... but your lucky and dont have to worry about running into one of them...

ASRS; you are a Goddess in the making! You too, Snowchick. The guys just don't want to chance being shown up.

The whole "lack of fun" thing is what got me out of MTB racing, and then bikes altogether. I seemed to be the only one doing it for fun.

At 45, I get plenty of giggles just showing up at the skatepark, and I never really gave a damn. I carve and flow, occasionally try to play with the coping, and I fall down. A bunch. Like Sharpie says, "I get up with a big ******* smile on my face."

Today, Joe and I took a couple of our students on a little excursion through some neighborhoods. They had to push up hills, and carve and slide back down. After two hours of sweating and pumping, they said it was the most fun they've ever had skating. And we didn't see one handrail.
That, we told them, was street skating!! 8)
