Default Good news and bad news

I finally found other people to longboard with in SLC. I thought I was all alone! Anyways, there is this really cool longboard store here, Traps sells from virtually every longboard company out there. The sad thing is that they are going out of business. Now you have to go to skateboard stores that only sell sector nine. Sector nine trucks and wheels aren't very good, and their boards questionable. This leads me to wonder if ten years down the road, companies like soul carver, flexdex, and davis designs will be long gone in place of companies like sector nine. Smaller companies usually make better products, are ALWAYS better to deal with, and are longboarders not businessmen. Your thoughts?

I would hate to see the smaller companies disapear. Even though I do ride a Sector 9, I like the fact that there is so much variety out there, and my next board will definatley be something different. I know first hand that the pivot trucks on the S9's suck. My wheels have been decent, though I have not had much experience with any other wheels.
However there is nothing questionable about the board. I LOVE my OG Cloud 9 deck. I cant beleive how much abuse it has taken!
And as far as deals go, it really depends on the shop you buy your board at too. I was shocked when they knocked $20 bucks off the sticker price on my board when I asked if they could hook me up with a better deal!
Sorry to hear such a great board shop in your area is going out of business. But hey, maybe you can hook up some great deals on thier longboards!

In more than a decade in the bike industry, I have seen the companies that "invented" mountain biking get bought out by the big boys. They keep the name, but the production goes overseas. The products are still quite usable, but some of their "soul" is gone. And a few just fade away, or struggle till they die.
Hopefully, this won't happen to our beloved longboards.

    Default shame

i also live in the salt lake area and i too think that it is bad that such a great boardshop is going under. i just bought my first longboard there about a week ago. I got an amazing deal (island cat catfish w/ color exkates all for $100 ) but at the same time, i was disappointed that the shop wouldnt be there for much longer. They did have the best selection of longboards probably in the state, and the service was great, they didnt treat you like only a customer. Its too bad i didnt venture in sooner. Traps, RIP.

I don't think s9 will take over all the small, brands as long as people like us buy the boards they shall always be in business and if that doesn't work, i shall cry and scare s9. Also you could build your own deck, and just order the equipment online from places like longskate.com
Aarg.. I am not really the Real Santa Claus, I have a hook, a taped, paper beard and some times a duct taped beard, and am an imposter who gets intoxicated easily, tired as a dog now...time for my nap
