There have always been cheap, crappy skateboards in big box stores. They usually aren't much fun to ride. In the future we might see larger ones with soft wheels; but they'll still be cheap and crappy and probably won't be much fun to ride.

probably not at target. maybe at GI Joe's because its a sports store, but no ones going to pay over $100 for a board at target.

There are longboard companies out there that specialize in boards for the big box stores, like Target. Target could, and may, stock completes from San Diego Speed (ironically, not from Diego), Krown, "No Fear" and others that rebrand like the "No Fear" boards are. I'd expect Target's price point to be about where Walmart's is: no more than $70.

The big break for consumers will be when you start seeing these toy-boards with those Randal ripoffs from China or other, similar, longboard trucks. When kids' first taste includes a carving truck, it will mean more.

One thing about the crap quality boards, short or long is that they can turn people off skating;how many kids have got a board and used it for a day then stopped because it didn't turn or roll well because the truck/bearings/wheels were crap?
"If longboarding becomes so popular that the larger brands are approached by the big retailers with promises of huge sales"...
This will have a detrimental effect because the big stores can buy larger volumes at cheaper prices than skateshops, operate on smaller margins and drive the prices down which will take trade from skateshops

Kind of a double edged sword really.

The difference between a walmart bike and a real bike, compared to a walmart skateboard and a real board.
If you buy a bike at walmart, it will most likely last you a long time, not too expensive, works fine, and its pretty sturdy. A bike shop will obviously have better bikes for better disciplines; A skateboard from walmart is cheap, plastic, terrible bearings, won't hardly last you 1 month, and does that sound like a good way to get into the sport by riding one of those?
If the first bike i rode fell apart and i cut myself up on one of them I don't think i'd enjoy it as much.

    Awesome Longboard,
    10/19/2010
I race with this board with my friends everyday, and this longboard always puts me in 1st or 2nd place. It's great for anyone who's starting to ride, not to mention great for those who've been riding for a while now. I haven't even broken it in yet, but it already picks up a ton of speed and has great control and is easy to stop. Great longboard!

i just honestly dont think bringing longboarding into the mainstream is a good idea at this point. if the public is exposed to brands like s9, arbor, etc.. then it looks like those are the only brands that exist. personally this was true for me. when i first picked up longboarding 4 years ago i thought s9, arbor and original were the only good longboard companies. i feel this is true for many kids. thanks to the 'fish i have discovered companies i never knew would have existed.

walmart just cant give you that experience.

To be honest, the 'underground' nature of longboarding is something that I actually really like about it. Its a community of shared stoke.
And the number of blatant kooks I see in these forums ALREADY makes me sad... I can't even imagine if Target/Walmart/etc. started selling Loaded/Original/Sector9's...
Granted, there's nothing wrong with those boards in the right hands... but in the wrong ones...

It could easily be done. The reality is, using their 'leverage' and getting up off of a long-term contract they could market an s9 quality board very easily. The issue is if there would be enuff of a demand for it. I dont think there would be. Even though LB'ing is growing relative to skateboarding, it is probably not big enuff to enter into a long-term contract with a decent board builder for them from a money stand point. Everyone knows those Target/WAL*MART bikes are straight sh** but they sell alot because all different cross-sections of the population buy them, from migrant workers to people who want gifts for their 10 year old kids... Longboards are a pretty focused product, not that many people want them per capita.

If we are talking about cheap, machine manufactured boards, may I suggest OS? I know they suck and all, but hey; Target sells rip stiks and soul skates.
