not to be a prick but have you ever freestyled? everyplace I put grip was someplace I have in times past needed it, standing on the bottom of nose or tail in casper is pretty common and the grip on the side is for oldschool kickflips

I only grip the nose and tail of my FS decks when not using skids, never felt the need to grip it for OS kickflips. I know some guys who put a blob of shoe-goo on those spots though.
Won't you need to grip both sides, BTW?
The advantage of symmetrical FS-decks is not having to think which direction your board is facing...

I tried one OS flip and the bottom of the deck was so slick that my kneejerk reaction was to grip one side, once I get a little smoother I'm gonna make the patch smaller and likely put another on the other side. I've always gripped the nose and tail regardless of skids but I'm somewhat retarded and FWIW this is my first symmetrical freesyle deck

Anyway, not technically a purchase, my buddy gave me his old shortboard, and I started learning slides today. I got check slides and coleman slides although still very sloppy and 50/50 chance of shredding my jeans.
Should be fun. Anyone have any experience with crails on a BS? I haven't ordered them yet but I'm pretty set on getting crails unless someone had a bad experience they want to share.

duke, crails are fun, but randal 42s are similar geometry, cheaper, lower, and US made. my 2 cents
