It kind of scares me that we are the same age and you are starting to wear spinal support and protection. Do you have a history of bad backs or something in your family? I can't imagine skating in those hip things + back doohickey + knee/elbow pads + helmet + slide gloves. Might as well break out some hockey shoulder pads and wrap your forearms in bubble wrap. Do you still get pretty good articulation when riding?

WTF are elbow pads?
How do I address this.... My whole life, I've been an adrenaline junkie, into "action sports" or whatever. Skating, skiing, rock climbing, downhill/freeride mountain biking, parkour, rugby, downhill skating, luging, jumping off ####, snowboarding, swinging from ropes, freediving, wadi bashing... The list goes on. So I've had some slams and bangs, though thankfully I've only ever broken a bone once
Anyway, whether all this was the cause or not, I do have a malformed vertebra (linky) in my lower spine... something that's been pretty ####### painful to deal with at certain times of my life, but somehow DH is one of the easier things for my back to deal with (I mean, look at that list..) So yes I have back "problems" but they're not horrid, at least not now.
Let me say more about the POC Spine Ergo, I didn't buy it as "back support"... I bought it as a spine protector - for speed days, fast runs, racing, and any time there's a guardrail... I've hit jersey barriers at 50 and it's not fun. I've hit guardrails in the 30s and that's not fun either. Seeing what D-Dub went through out in CO (a place and a group of riders I respect... keep on healin' dude) made me think a LOT about spine protection. Being such a total nutjob ("I ain't the type to stay home and knit," as my mom says) safety has always been something I bother to learn about, worry about, and then get on with it. I have no problem spending $$ when I have it on being SAFE (yes, both kinds). As for wearing gear while riding, hip shorts feel perfectly fine. I've tried on a lot of back protectors and they're fine... the POC seemed best. Helmet and slide gloves and kneepads feel like nothing to me.. They should be standard gear for anyone doing what we do.
Frankly if you're just getting into the sport, it's not necessarily a huge thing to worry about. But I've had (and seen) enough accidents while skating/luging and racing both that I've realized, you don't now what's gonna happen when you're going fast, especially racing. You can get good at it, you can prepare for it, but you don't get to call when something's gonna go to #### real fast.
And when that happens, I'd rather not be sorry.
Though I am sorry this is so long... I tried to keep it short
edit: pureadrenaline, nice purchase some drifters are on my next paycheck I think... I love that thane.

I enjoy 80's and 83's and sometimes I like to mix my duros with softer in the fronts.

Fair enough on the spine protector and what not then. I just can't imagine trying to get a good tuck wearing all that gear. I wasn't making fun of you by the way, I was legitimately curious, because most people our age don't go to quite those lengths. I just do helmet, knee pads, slide gloves normally and when I am practicing slides I add in the elbow pads because it is easy to drag an elbow when falling in a hands down slide.
EDIT: And elbow pads are this funky invention where you put like a plate on a sleeve and slip it over your elbow so that your skin stays on when you drag it on the ground in a fall.
