I've been working on this pretty hard too. I came up with a Voodoo, Paris 180 front, Paris Hangar on a 35* randal in back. Its nice and carvy but crazy stable.

70mm wheels also tend to drift smoother and more predictably than 75mm+ wheels.

Re: Topmounts + 70mm Wheels = Magic? Why?
on my revenger i ride 42* randals and 90a venom barrels, with 76mm superballs, super leany trucks, and big wheels, no wheelbite at all, its amazing, and its also 5" off of the ground, but i still love it, and id rather have a higher board then lower for DH because i like leverage.

thanks a bunch! ...kinda eerie that i was thinking of doing the same setup...but i'll go with big zigs to be "unique".

Re: Topmounts + 70mm Wheels = Magic? Why?
Yeah. It actually sorta did. I learned that most people can only fit 70mm with a low degree truck. I was wondering how my 77mm Speed Vents fitted if no one else's could until I realized I have 47* trucks...

People like 70mm wheels because they are narrower than most bigger wheels, and they have just enough grip to be useful yet, drift when wanted to.
im sorry mate, but some people really can notice that much difference, just because you can't feel it doesn't mean other people aren't more sensitive to that.
Ride for the stoke, not for everyone else.

Friend has an avenger with 78mm blastwaves and bear trucks. No wheelbite, very fun setup for dh except the trucks have a bent axle.

I ride an Avenger with 42 randall and paris hanger 180's. I have an 1/8 inch riser and I get no wheel bite and I run Bigzig bushings that I made super loose

Re: Topmounts + 70mm Wheels = Magic? Why?
I gotta reiterate the fact that a smaller wheel gets up to its top speed much quicker. So on short courses or courses with lots of drifty, tech turns, the idea is you'll recover speed much faster. Not to mention pushing, and the hieght thing.
Although I've been using my nano firefly with 1/8" gummy risers, 42* 180 Randals and Purple 75mm Otangs nice and loose with no bite. I LOVE that setup, and its pretty low as well. Just about 4 1/4" from bottom of wheel to top center of board.
I've been wanting to try some 70mm wheels with no risers though too.

For sure. An extra 5mm in wheel height makes a huge difference to your set-up...dunno why anyone is trying to dispute that.

I think human perception is outstanding, although in this case I feel it is more affected by what people think the ride height to do to their stability and style of riding. Honestly, if you put a complete noob on a longboard with that height difference, I guarantee you they would not notice the difference. Although some top riders may be more attuned to this than any intermediate/moderate rider I think most people like it lower because they believe lower will make them more stable - if, however they had gone into this situation unbiased (like the aforementioned noob) they would not notice the difference.
