i run 80mm wheels on my avenger no riser on 40* plates its still pretty loose for me and no wheelbite. but it is one tall mofo at 5 inches from the top of the deck to the bottom of the wheels. but i should add some half inch risers and amp the wheels up to 90 mm flywheels for the hell of it
    I <3 Pulse longboards!

Well for me with smokies it is almost imposible to run wheels any bigger than 70 mm
because I would get wheel bite if my trucks were as loose as i like to run em (as loose as they can get with out bite) in some instances like that the extra 2.5 mm does matter.

I'm much more comfortable on my topmount on my zigzags than bigzigs. plus the smaller wheels have less chatter and a more predictable drift overall.

I also run 50* randals the back one dewedged

my topmount setup is force c7s wedged 7.5* at the front and just a normal 35* at the back with 73mm speed vents. the front is almost 5" and back is 4". feels pretty good cause im mongo and i like leverage on the front.

Mongo only effects kicking and footbreaking, it has nothign to do with the feel of the board.....

i footbrake mongo as well so a low back feels better. i also use this board for everything (cruising/commuting e.g) so a lower back also is alot better for kicking.

topmount fans everywhere are posting on this! it is magic, a happy medium. I think it is awesome on parking garages.
I have a madrid roger hickey, 28" wbase and a pin missile 31" wbase.
pinmissile is awesome for stability, higher speeds. I just need to buy (when the snow disappears) a pair of orange bigzigs for the font and lemon for the back.
The hickey has that setup but with zigzags, it is awesome. wheel wells FTW on bigzig tomounts.

I personally just like the smaller wheels on a top mount cause it's normally a smaller deck so anything big just feels like overkill and sluggish. Also, drop decks drift more so bigger wheels and bigger contact path makes sense while a smaller wheel have a better drift top mounted than a larger wheel. It is weird though how being on 66mm wheels and 76mm wheels and how I can feel the difference.

As for the original question, I think small wheels on a top mount are better for everything, better drift, easier to push since the wheels are lighter and your higher up on a top mount, not worrying about wheel-bite even though its more mental at high speeds, they're cheaper which is always good.

How bout some 65-70mm flys chaput? Mini fly core and 75a thane, spent a lot of time thinking about it.

Now that I think about it, you're right. My bigzigs do feel like overkill sometimes on my bombhills. Never thought about it until now.

Makes me want zigzags more and more.

I think that would be sick, but why 75a? Seems a bit soft...

flywheels have a large enough core that if you were to use a harder urethane it would provide with a fairly rough ride.

yeah, 75a flys feel just as fast as harder duro wheels, plus they drift like butter and have the best hook up out of any wheel I've ridden.

Haven't tried grippins, 75a grippins ride similar to 75a flys? or would a 81a be more comparable?

yes, an uber-grippy, square-lipped slalom wheel IS the best for sliding

The difference between 70mm and 75mm is 2.5mm in height. Thats a little more than the thickness of a nickle. You cant notice that.
Perhaps you can't but some can, and skateboarders in general are insanely perceptive about this stuff. Plus, as already mentioned, that 2.5 mm is actually 5mm because you have to rise your deck up more.

If you don't think people can notice 2.5mm, you don't spend much time around street skaters. I've watched them switch boards and insist that the other guy's board was 'wide as hell' when I can't even see the difference, and my steel ruler says they are barely 3mm different. The scary thing is I can tell certain things too. I once bought new Sector 9 GOS wheels because my everyday commuting wheels were getting so worn down it was affecting my ride. I measured the 'way smaller' old wheels and they were barely 4mm smaller than the new ones, even though the new ones looked and felt positively giant in comparison. That's 2mm lower.

not everything is a silverfish fad. the difference in feel between a 75mm wheel and a 70mm wheel is immense. i have been riding 70mm wheels for about a year now and over summer i put a set of bigzigs on my deck. when i tried to drift them they couldn't even compare to the zigzags predictability-wise and they were about 10x smoother. small wheels are easier to control, thats why big names ride them.

    You are both right.

I know of a topmount in which you can run 42 randals, loose ass trucks and big zigs with no wheelbite.
    you refering to your board?

dont worry im still thinking about it, im gonna wait till my birfday (june-ish). cant wait to throw a design on it and brush on a clear coat

haha maybe... shameless plug. I apologize haha.

Ya we just got some tees in. I'm pretty stoked about them. Take all the time you need man. We'll be here til the end of next summer as I have to go away for school but my friend might carry on the legacy. If he doesn't, I'll still build boards casually during the summers.
