Default Topmounts + 70mm Wheels = Magic? Why?

Why do many people say that topmount speedboards and 70mm wheels are a magic combination?

because bigger wheels give you wheelbite, also people don't like really tall setups

70mm is usually about as big as you can go on a topmount without wheelbite. 70mm is also a good mix of fast acceleration and maintaining speed.

I agree with you there, but why not just have wheel wells or cut-outs?

And I know height is still an issue.

because the idea behind a topmount is to be able to get your foot comfortably over your front truck and wheel wells only go so far

You cant start the height bullshit. The difference between 70mm and 75mm is 2.5mm in height. Thats a little more than the thickness of a nickle. You cant notice that.

People like 70mm wheels because they are narrower than most bigger wheels, and they have just enough grip to be useful yet, drift when wanted to.

On average, a topmount is 3.5-4 inches off the ground. 4 inches is about 100mm. If you add 2.5 to that, you wont notice that 3% increase.

And as if your topmount with 70mm wheels doesnt get wheelbite by a nickle thickness.

The height factor is not bullshit. You put 76mm wheels on your setup you get wheel bite, so you compensate with riser pads thus making your setup higher 1/8" or 1/4" higher. Plus, as far as i can tell, there aren't many topmounts that can run a low degree trucks with 76mm wheels and not have the possibility of wheel bite so you pretty much going to have to run riser pads.

He's saying heights in that amount are bullshit.

    You are both right.

I know of a topmount in which you can run 42 randals, loose ass trucks and big zigs with no wheelbite.

The funny thing is, most people detirmine if the trucks will get wheelbite by carving around outside on it, or leaning on it standing still. But when you are going somwhat fast, you will never get that far over on your board.

question about big wheels and wheel bite:

can an Avenger handle a 42* randal plate (180s) with big zigs without wheelbite? (i like loose ass trucks). or should i stick with grabbing some zigs?

It's true. For me though, I won't ever have a purely speed oriented setup. Those tend to feel dead at low speeds. I want to be able to have almost (it's impossible surpass) as much fun cruising to the store on the board that I bomb hills on. I like loose ass trucks. My smokies are as loose as they go and I love it.

Ya, i have another speedboard setup, but its on cast trucks, and I have plenty of room for carving, which i do alot on it.

    Toasted topmount anyone?
