I love this thread. You all have some great stories about your dogs! Soul, you've got an amazing dog (11 miles!).
I have a Husky, Niko, that has pulled me from before I had a longboard. When he was just about 9 months old when I started having him pull me on a shortboard for short distances. In a couple of months he had worked up to 2-3 miles and packed on some lbs.
I taught him to respond to the board, too. When I call out "this way" he looks back to see which direction I'm leaning the board. It pretty cool. One of the most impressive things is his attention to stoplights. When we come to an intersection he's learned to look up at the light to tell when it's good to take off again!
I was feeding him Iam's large breed puppy food and I guess that food combined with the workout turned him into a beast. His shoulders are about 2 feet wide. I've had numerous comments on his size (97 lbs. at his largest). These days he'll still pull me at full speed for a half mile or so on the flats before he tires out and starts looking at me like "I can only pull my weight now. He's 10 years old. This time of year I have to take him out in the early morn or late night. It's just too hot for him.
He's still my pride and joy. I wish that they would never age.
He here is with our other dog, Bella.
Thanks for the stories everyone!

I took my parents 2 year old chocolate lab out for a "run" a couple weeks ago. They had her normal leash on so i think she was inhibited by that... im going to have them put her harness on next time.
My girlfriend wants us to get a dog. I like dogs and am not opposed to getting one, the only reservation i have is being "tied down" because of it. One dog we both agree on is a greyhound. How do you think a greyhound is as a longboard "sled dog"?
Besides a husky, what types of dog are best at pulling people?
I think a greyhound may kill you they top out at around 45 mph
and you will be going close to that .
after they race greyhounds they stick them in a box and dont excersise em at all for 4 days they put out so much so fast it just wrecks the dogs.
I would stick with the molossus type dogs for warmer climates
and spitz./sled types for colder climates The breeds of Molosserworld
heres a list of almost 100 breeds that most should be superior pullers
american bulldogs and pitbulls are the champion weight pullers
144x body weight
rottis used to pull carts as draught dogs they have a good combination of power, endurance and working attitudes
slingboard your dog looks really good for 10 years he does have some thickness to his shoulders still.
I hope the puppy im getting in dec likes to pull
my hip is flared up from all the skating i did yesterday
champion sled teams pull up to 160 miles a day !
taking a dog to these levels requieres specific diets w lots of suppliments.
we are asking alot out of our dogs to pull us solo
the effort is going to be more then they can sustain for extended periods has anyone had a dog pull longer then slingboards 2-3 miles ?
i lived with a lazy dog owner who had a Whippet/Doberman cross that absolutely loved to go LBing with me. He was maybe 50 lbs tops but we would fly. I recently got my own pup, an American Staffordshire Bull Terreir who I think will be a great dog for a riding partner. Has anyone tried the offroad longboards with a dog?
My peek-a-pom grew up on longboarding, then we added a full pom - he don't longboard, so the boards were left out of our daily walks for the past 6 months. Well, finally got the peeky back on tour today - just sent the little pom out in the backyard for squirrel chasin' and me and the peeky went out for a cruise. The pom was none the wiser when we got back, he he.
Awesome thread. I've done this a little bit up and down the block, but my dog is too easily distracted by squirrels and other dogs. I'm very impressed with the safety measures people take. Harnesses, having water, that husky that can watch for traffic signals. It makes me want spend some time training my dog for this kind of thing. Something else to consider is hard stops on pavement and how it affects their foot pads. If that happens too much it could do some damage.

i cant take both my doggies out at once... mostly because ones a big briard, and ones a tiny mini poodle...
the younger one, my poodle is a hyper guy though, i take him out on my board all the time. i dont go very fast though, as the poor chap cant keep up. thats my easy way to tire the little bugger out.
the bigger girl, though, she older, and senile. god taking her out is a PAIN!!
i attempted to ride with her once, but she ended up somehow pushing me off...
i also once put baby socks on my poodle's paws and put him on my skateboard and held his leash and went around the block a coupla times. he loved it. he freaked out at first, but he relaxed.
the socks were so his paws dont gt chewed up by the griptape.

One in a while when my dad doesnt I'll take my dog to the park a little ways away. I can't really do a lot of long distance because 1) he's very easily distracted and insists on sniffing and pissing on every single bush we pass, and 2) when he see's other dogs he becomes more of a self-guided missile than an animal. Luckily I havent had any super bad falls.
He's a german shepherd/rottweiler/doberman mix. There might be a little lab in there too.
Longboarding with a dog is dope. My german short hair has that really fast sort of "retard speed" and can go for miles without slowing down. Once he started deviating from a straight line i came up with a solution. I tie a string around a tennis ball and hand it on the end of a stick. I dangle it in front of him and he just goes ape sh!t. Granted i have to ride around with a stick and tennis ball but ill be damned it he doesnt go twice as fast.
I want to get a dog to pull me so i can be super lazy too!
The dog powered scooter looks cruel, but if your using a harness that would seem a little better.

That's awesome! Like the donkey and the carrot.
My dog is an old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. He used to be more spirited, but now at 14 he just lays around and sleeps most of the day. If I take him out when I longboard the most he'll do is follow me at a quick trot. I can't remember the last time I saw him actually run, I think he has arthritis.
I like to take him out as often as I can, because he's so sedentary around the house, I feel like I need to get him to excise to keep him healthy in his old age. I am hoping I will be able to get a puppy before old Copper passes on. Young dogs are usually much easier to train when they have a trained older dog to model their behavior after. And who knows, maybe a young pup will breath some new youth into the old fart.
If I had more than 1 dog I would be tempted to make an off season dog sled. I would feel so bad ass rolling up to school in one and parking one in the junior lot. Kind of cruel tho but emits fewer greenhouse gasses.

Reason: my grammar ain't well
Shes an, oh, 25 lb. labradoodle F2. a dwarf poodle and a labradore had puppies that had puppies with other labradoodles that resulted in my dog. So, shes a curly black haired little puppy.
i'm ~125 lbs.
This dog man, shes a freak! for teh lawls, i took her for a walk but i was on my board. She starts jogging, and then she realizes im not slowing her down. She bolts! We're going a good ~20mph down the block. Wee head toward a busy street and i lean hard down a feeder street. She looks back and goes with the flow. Crazy!
So, now we go out running/skating every weekend, probably about 3 miles worth. Granted shes really thristy afterwords (we share 1 bottle during our run-skate), but she loves it! the funny part is she hates skateboards...
I always laugh at the looks i get getting pulled by a dog a fifth my weight.
Go dogs!
