Helmets are not an option if you have any care about the people around you. Forget about your own sorry, pathetic life. After seeing how the people close to me reacted to what happened when I needed my helmet, I will NEVER ride a skateboard without a helmet on again. I used to cruise to class and such without a lid...stuff really sank in after I saw how my parents, friends, brothers, GF etc. reacted. Bad stuff happens to you no matter how "safe" you are riding. 15 mph down a straight sidewalk can still result in you falling in some freak accident and smacking your head hard enough to disrupt and ruin other people's lives forever.
Again, forget about how you value your own life. If you have even the smallest care for the people who care about you, don't be an arrogant, self-centered bastard and do the "not cool" thing of putting a lid on. You're already a dork, you're 23 and you skateboard, can't make it any worse by showing that you recognize that bad things happen no matter how safe you are being.
I wear a helmet to keep myself safe, but a driving force is to protect the people that care about me. I will never do something as heartless as throwing their care to the wind and riding without a lid.
Carelessness, mistakes, and temporary slip of thought can injure and kill...you don't need to be pushing hard to fvck up badly enough to die. All in all, you never expect serious injuries, they happen regardless of everything you do to prevent them.

You are the chump dude, that is a retarded statement. You never know when something is going to happen.
Agreed. My not-broken-in lime Zigs slid out on me while I was doing some snappy carving on my new Timeline a few days ago. I wasn't wearing a helmet, seeing as I was merely tooling around the school campus, and luckily I didn't get hurt. It made me realize that random stuff just happens even when you're not pushing any limits.
And besides, if it were about the looks, any of my boards would automatically make up for the "gayness" of the helmet. Pshaw.
rather than insert the image directly into the thread, here's a link helmets not optional
DO NOT PRESS THE LINK IF YOU ARE UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THIS SORT OF THING.

man.. do you guys even read.. i said i own a helmet and pads.. but im not going to wear them everyday when im just cruising to work or whatever at speeds i could run as fast... you guys should really wear helmets/pads everywhere you go if you are so paranoid and scared of life.

So please, enlighten us, what was the point of this thread? Do you want support for choosing to not wear a helmet on some rides? Do you want to encourage people to believe that helmets are optional?...or were you just starting a thread to see how many people there are who are "paranoid and scared of life" on this site?
I am not paranoid about life...but I respect my family and friends enough to not risk something as stupid as not wearing a helmet. If I didn't make it clear the first time allow me to reiterate...
1. Helmets are not optional, EVER, in my opinion
2. Forget about your own safety and show some care and concern for the people close to you
Take it or leave it...I don't care.

I used to ride a moped. Another mode of transportation which people often choose not to wear a helmet. You wouldn't believe how many people gave me #### for riding that tiny little thing with a full face. "It's just a moped, how fast can it go?!" 33mph MAX if you're curious.
I also happened to get hit by a truck wearing that very helmet, and still managed to chip three teeth, and get a concussion that now affects my short term memory. If I didn't have that helmet, I would be dead or brain-dead. Quite frankly, I don't know which would be worse.
FYI, learning how to walk at the ripe age of 18 is not an enjoyable experience.
... I ride without one because it's inconvenient and uncomfortable when I want to go for a chill cruise or when I'm going to classes.
Pretty much the same thing said over and over again when the seat belts became mandatory. That and it wrinkled their clothes. I was still prone to not wearing my seat belt when I was alone (set the example when wife/kids were riding with me BUT they'd give me #### if I didn't ). Anyway just 5 or 6 years ago, I got pulled over going to the post office. $50 ticket did the trick and I wear it all the time.
Pads and helmet should be used all the time. Just makes sense, even at slower speeds. You don't plan on falling but I guess it's not an "if " but "when". There's a lot of ankles, wrists, elbows and heads cracked every year, at slow speeds. People just walking on icy sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, etc. So just pushing up my street and riding the gentle grade back down at 9.8mph could do a lot more damage if I can't catch myself and run it out. Isn't that a novel idea, just practicing in front of the house, I guess I should be practicing wearing helmet and pads too. 8)
Ever seen a facebook album entirly of a friend in the hospital for not wearing a helmet?
I'll give you a hint, it pretty danm gross (pumpkin faced).
About a week after, I went out and picked up a brainsaver.
what a coincidence, I was being cocky yesterday thinking I could bomb this sick hill on my dervish and then ended up getting more speed than I was comfortable with, so I stupidly tried to run it out. Long story short my left elbow has a nice 6 inch piece of skin missing, a 3 inch bloody scrape on my left hip, and the left side of my back s pretty road rashed. I also tore up a nice shirt and a new pair of shorts and boxers.... GREEAATTT.
Just ordered a helmet and some pads yesterday. I probably won't wear them while cruising but I definitley will wear them when doing slides and speed.
When I just cruise around town, I don't wear pads or a helmet. I'll be honest. But this is only when I'm just crusing around town. Whenever I'm doing hard carving or even just going 20 mph I atleast wear my helmet, knee pads, and slide gloves. I found that when I do fall, its mostly me hitting a rock in the road and me just going flying when I'm only pushing on flatland. One time I was skating around my block and I hit a rock and went flying, scrapped up my hands and couldn't use them for 2 1/2 weeks b/c the cuts where so deep. It was just an inconvince to me. Now I really don't mind pads whenever I'm doing anything but carving. I can keep some skin and still have a lot of fun.

I definitely don't need them for just cruising around the city..
Things happen whether you're planning for them or not.

From my experience, and like others have said, it's about one percent of the forum that doesn't wear helmets. I forget who it was, but I agree with whoever said that they don't take longboarders without helmets seriously. Get a helmet, wear it, live to ride another day.
you made a thread, and then reacted quite strongly when people didnt agree with you.
to me this indicates that you dont feel comfortable with the idea that its probably a good idea to wear a helmet.
tons of people dont wear helmets every time they step on a skateboard, but you were the one that made a post to knock it, and then got defensive when people didnt agree.
skateboarding is dangerous, know the risks and take the appropriate actions to protect yourself.
if you really felt safe when you go out and ride, i doubt that this topic would bug you at all.
Justin and others showed you many valid reasons why wearing a helmet is always a good idea, but you reacted by insulting them, telling them they were afraid of life.
they're not afraid of life, they know the risks of what they do (some know first hand) and they take the proper precautions to ensure they will be around long enough to continue to do it.
maybe you're the one thats afraid, not afraid of life, but afraid of admitting that what you do can kill you no matter what speed or style of riding you're doing.
if you cant at least understand why many people will not set foot on a board without a helmet, then maybe you should take a good hard look at why you care so damn much about weather or not someone wears a helmet.

"gay" means happy. I like to be "gay" and wear my pads.
QFT! I agree. WIN
