Default do you sand your last layer of polyurethane ?

As the title says do you sand your last coat of polyurethane? Also how many layers of it do you usually lay? I am refurbishing a board and have laid 3 layers and was wondering the average amount.

I just layer it until it feels sealed. I say feels because I just run my palm over it to feel for roughness. I personally don't sand the poly, but if you're looking for something matte instead of shiny, I guess a very fine (200< grit IMO) would be ideal so you don't take away too much or leave scratches.

I wouldn't use steel wool, pieces of it can embed in the finish and rust. Although that might look kind of cool. Go to an automotive store like Autozone and pick up some 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper and wet sand the clear. You can even go as high as 1500 or 2000 grit if you want a perfect finish. However, you'd have to have a decent layer of clear and really smooth base coat for 1500 or 2000 grit to even be worth it. After you get it sanded down buff it with some polishing compound to bring the shine back. Just my two cents.

I used to sand mine up to 2000 grit, then polish it after like 5-7 coats. Now i just do one coat, sand with 220, do another, and call it good.

Yeah, I never sand the last coat. I've pretty much gotten to the point where if I'm building just for myself, I just want to seal it. No need for a mirror finish when I will beat my board to hell and back.
