Default Best wood for building a longboard?

I'm thinking about building my own longboard. I was wondering what wood would be best for this project? I was thinking birch but I just wanted to get some other opinions from people who have built them. I also was hoping for some suggestions on hard wheels for sliding, I'm new and dont'n know much about all the brands out there.

Baltic birch is what allloot of people use for their boards, its durable and flexible. so that would be my suggestion.

for sliding, abec11 strikers. they come in 2 sizes (66mm, 77mm.) and in 75a, 78a, 81a, 84a, and 88a. The greater the number before the "a", the harder the wheels are, and the easier it is to slide. You could also get abec11 powerballs for sliding if you want pink, those are 78a i think.

Baltic birch, rock maple if you can get it.

As for wheels, Gravity-Sergios and Earthwing-Slide A are the most prominent tech-slide wheels.
If you want a wheel that grips a bit too go for hard strikers, orange hawgs, etc.
The earth shall inherit the meek.

no, birch just is pretty crappy wood (plywood), but baltic is amazing. i also like to use bamboo plywood (nice and flexy).

The house we're prolly moving to has some bamboo growing in the backyard. I'm guessing it would have to grow way bigger (its about 10 feet tall and roughly 1/3 inch in diameter) to be able to be used in a longboard. Anyone know about harvesting (right word??) bamboo??

If you're sliding, you might want a more stiff board. Use hard maple. It might be harder to get but it's soo much better than baltic birch in my opinion. In all my experiences, baltic birch flakes and splinters compared to more of an even wear on hard maple. I think it delaminates easier too, but maybe it was because the board company I bought from sucks.

Just wondering, but the local shop here carries baltic birch 1/8 (standard 5x5) for 25 bucks. Is that about how much you guys are paying?

Not sure where you are at, but that is a little bit on the high side, but not too bad. 8)

I'm in Colorado Springs, but none of the other shops in town carry it besides a specialty woodworking shop. So i guess I'll have to stick with them, but hey, maybe if I become a regular they'll cut me a deal (I can't imagine that it gets much business).

I just bought some 1/4" maple plies for my first board. I'm not sure if that is too thick because everyone around here seems to use 1/8" or even thinner. Would I have to bend one ply at a time for this to work?

ive done it with 1/4in maple and i did two plys and it was awesome, but i would try it with one at a time just to get the entire curveture of the said board. good luck, and post some pics when done.
