Glad to see Dimm's entry pushing the limits, and Piedogger's matching set is excellent as well.

This entry Consists of a board with homemade wheels, a new style of toe clip, a Sector 9 deck, and Independent trucks.

The wheels are made out of UHMW. They slide like nothing else, and are very durable.

The toe clip idea is to have a quick release binding that doesn't get in the way of using the board as usual, mainly for jumping curbs while traveling around the city. Works great.

Each toe clip is two bars of metal sandwiched together. The bottom bar has cutouts in it to keep the shoe stub from sliding sidways out of the clip.

Here's a vid of both in action together:

Kraft.. your car in the vid had me laughing at once... that thing is a trip! and while I can't imagine UHMV wheels at speeds above 20... they look fun as hell (I wanna try!)...and glad you got some footage of gritty RI... RI shreds.

Much respect to you as well.. You should post some pics of those dissected failed vacuum bag drop decks. Pretty amazing sight.

And yeah, all footage shot in Providence, RI. You all should come visit some time, great longboarding city.

Some more info on the wheels/clips:

The wheels are basically good either for insane trick slides (at any speed?) or for learning slides at ridiculously low speeds. Particularly for starting to learn standing slides they have helped me a lot.

I had been using matching green UHMW pucks for the past couple weeks, but they were way too slow compared to the small contact patches of the wheels.. I stepped it up to delrin pucks for the vid (earlier today) which took a little getting used to.. double iciness.. but work great together.

The hole saw was a 3 incher, so that's about 76mm wheels size, used a forstner bit to drill the bearing seats, all on the drill press, A lot of clamping tricks to get the different bits to line up centered.

The clips are better suited for soft wheels (pump and jump), but I figured I'd throw them together on one board, partly for the contest, but also to show that the clips don't get in the way of any of those slides (imagine trying them with skyhooks), and to show that the wheels have enough grip not to slide out while doing those sideways jumps.

I know the clips are kooky as fuck to some.. but the added functionality combined with the discreteness of them far outweighs that for me. It rules being able to do a 180 jump when someone yells "ollie up" at you.. and it seems pretty similar to a snowboard.

Not sure how snowboard bindings work, but with this I deliberately placed the stub just in front of where the shoe bends when standing on the balls of your feet, allowing good freedom of motion and higher jumps.

Tried various heights with the shoe stub/ledge underside, and found that the slightly higher ones, in addition to allowing for more sole wear, pull off the board easier. The gap allowing the stub to rotate out on any axis. Definitely a very subtle balance between jumping reliably and tripping you up when the board stops. A couple shots of bails were included in the vid to give a sense of how easily they can detach.

b-e-yoo-tee-ful Rus. that thing is sick sick SICK.

and I really like that idea with the umhw. maybe you can pair them with soft wheels in the front. like grippy wheels in the front, and those in the back?

hey kraft, enlighten me...where do you find a slab of UHMW?? and are those wheels for sale??

edit: i'm no expert in materials, but maybe you could find out the duro of those wheels just for interests/curiosity's sakes? there has to be some sort of method to be able to do this, but i have no idea where to even look

I'd like to try more grip in the back personally.. but on a symmetrical board you get to try both eh?

As with polyurethane, UHMW polyethylene is available in a range of hardnesses.. The typical stuff you find is off the charts for the durometer 'a' scale, it comes in at about a 68d. (you could say ~120a but the 'a' scale ends at 100). Two other things that complicate the measurement are if the UHMW is oil impregnated that is more slide at the same hardness, and when the material gets scratched it generally gives it more grip, like tread on a tire.

I like Modern Plastics in RI, but every state (including the internet state) has it's own plastic stores. A 2" x 12" x 3" block should run you around 15$. Or if you can find solid rod in ~3" diameter that would be even less.

I would make pretty much any skate related thing for people at around 15$ an hour, plus material and consumables cost. So a set of those wheels would cost around 50$.

The bars would be a little trickier because it would make the most sense to get a batch of them heat treated instead of wasting drill bits on tempered high carbon steel. The shoe stubs could pair nicely with those replacement shoe sole kits. Mass produced the shoe/bar set could cost around 30$.

Dude! I love your work... I swear to god.

Keep making ####. That thing is crazy. You made your own wheels? And special shoes? That's just insane.

You are an inventor. That's awesome.

Truly a worthy contest for the Fish. I was worried early on, not from the quality. All decks are truly outstanding, with a level skill to match anything out there. I was more concerned about the paucity of entry numbers, and the lack of some crazy $hit. We're are definitely there. I am a pawn among kings. Rus, the mold is mindboggling. The trial end error involved to undertake such a task and the time and dedication, is inspirational. I suppose at your level, you might want to consider computer modeling and mold creation with a nice CNC setup. I do have to say the best paint job goes to Bertman. The 70's are not dead! Good luck to all. See you on the other side.

hoch I must say you have one of the craziest constructions I have ever seen... well done on that! looks gorgious.

Not only was the construction in this contest very pretty but the innovation and all was just crazy! I mean we have wheels being made, and vlam foam cores, w-concave after being pressed with matching shoes and helmet. There are boards with 3 years of trial and error, and so many more that I cant remeber off the top of my head that were just rediculous!
