Default First build- old school solid oak

I got the board building bug so I decided to build a board for my son's 8th birthday next week. He's been skating since this winter on a cheapie Target board he got for Christmas. He is still into it so I decided it's time he had a real board.

I modeled it after the board I had growing up, A G&S Warptail. It's made from solid 3/4" red oak and is 26x 7". I bought a inexpensive truck package off Ebay to set it up. I didn't want to spend too much on it until I know he's going to stick with it. The Core trucks it came with are pretty good, but I will eventually get him bigger wheels and risers. The tail protector is just a piece cut out of a kitchen poly cutting board.

I'm also building one for myself. It will be 30x 8". I'm waiting on the trucks I ordered to show up and I'll be able to finish it. Can't wait to give him his and I get mine finished and go skating!

    Boards glued up...

    Shaping the warptail...

    Cut out, drilled and sanded.

Finished product- hope he likes it!

Very nice build! If he don't like it, I sure would.

EDIT: You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.
I'll getcha for that build, though!

The tail is formed by laminating another piece of wood on top of the deck where the tail will be and then shaping it out of that block by cutting/ sanding.

I used a drum sander in a drill press for the top (inside) curve, and a belt sander for the bottom curve. Very messy but it works. Ideally I would have used a bandsaw to rough it out first and finished it up with the sanders, but any bandsaw I can afford won't take a 8" board on edge so I had to do it the slow messy way.

Love seeing that family stoke, much respect for being a real Dad. I never forgot the things my father made for me in his workshop (although never a skateboard), your son is lucky.
