Default Formica/Wood/Foam build from THN Longboards

Just a short update and some pictures of the THN Longbards new Formica Catapultas FoamCore model. The weight of the board after the reduction is (for the XL model) 1700gr, which is very good I think considering the size of the board and the fact that the flex and the general stiffness is still kept at a minimum. The pattern used to reduce the weight of the wood core is inspired by natures own way of creating light constructions. This way of working, with an“organic reduction pattern” turned out to be very successful. So successful that I will probably be able to reduce yet another 18% when I do the next version.

What type of foam is that?
And what's the tool called which you used to cut the foam plugs?

You sure can, but it also depends where you live. These boards are made in Sweden and shipping a board to the US for example costs a fortune. I wish it didn't, because I love when people ride my boards in far off places, but it does.

    That's bloody lovely!

Thanks for all the process pics! When I first saw all the holes and foam I though that it looked like a lot of work for a bit of weight loss, but knocking off over a kilo and a half is flippin amazing!

I loved your other fomrica boards so much I bought a sheet of it! Sitting in the attic til board building season! Cheers!

Thanks everybody. I just want to give a short update on where I am today. You are absolutely right Geeezer, drilling all those holes was a drag. The foam pattern actually looks quite different today (see the updated image below). There are still a couple of holes left in the foam pattern, but what's new are those two "lungs" on each side of the wood stringer. This new foam pattern reduces the the board's weight even more (and at the same time makes it easier to produce). The latest version is merely 1250gr (1,25kg). Still really stiff because of the thick layers of 1,3 mm Formica AR+ on each side which gives the sandwich construction really nice strength. By the way, the new version also includes wheel wells. They should have been there already on version 1.0 of Catapultas, but it isn't until now that I have found a way of doing them quickly and yet with the precision that I am looking for.

The board in the picture is the standard version of Catapultas and it's 975 mm long, 250 mm wide and the wheelbase can be set between 745 and 810 mm (as far as I can remember).

I'm actually working on an almost identical version at the moment, but instead of shiny Formica AR+ I will use a rough Formica base (i.e. without the high gloss surface) with really thin oak veneer on top of it. Sort of a high tech board with a really organic look. I have a feeling that one might turn out really nice as well.

for those that function better knowing dimensions in inches, here you are:

    Length: 38.38"
    Width: 9.8"
    WB options: 29.3" and 31.9"

    Hope that helps.

and Gomiworks, it might not be a bad idea to list specs in inches as well. I know that it might be a pain, but it might bring in more buyers if they know the specs without having to look them up. but thats all on you

I'll do it for you on all your boards if you get me a discount :P
