    Default hardwood board?

wel, in my woodshop class, i have to do a jointing project... i decided i wanted to make longboard. i dont really intend for it to actually be rideable, but more for me to put on my wall. i've already done a rough sketch, ad i'll upload it as soon as i figure out my stupid scanner...
as far as wood goes though, i was planning a light colored wood such as cherry or walnut, maybe poplar, and then walnut, or some other dark wood...
are those good choices, or should i choose others? what would you reccomend?

i intend to make it 9' wide at the wides point, and the tail will be 3". it will be 29"-30" long in length.
    thanks!!

    Longwood Skateboards

Look at his longboards. I've seen them in real life. VERY VERY beautiful boards.

When I saw the thread title I was thinking "It'd be sweet to make a board out of ironwood..."

I'd suggest Walnut. It's reaallly hard on sawblades though. Although nothing near as hard as ironwood.

Black Walnut is best used in small doses.. I have used it often. Iron wood (blue beech) is not easy to work with. Poplar is wonderful but splits easily. Cherry is a great choice as well.

Poplar is a good core when fiberglassed. Cherry is a softwood though?

what are you guys reading? White Ash from Appalachia makes the dopest and i will bet you all bearings in the world on it. Cherry is pretty, walnut is brittle, maple is heavy and brittle. If you want to free yourself from the crap boards of plywood and glue, do it right.

Here's a website about exotic wood.

Here's a pic of mine. It's Red Mangaris, which is a lot like teak.

Mangaris is a brand name. The wood is actually balau, it's got about twice the flexural strength of teak and is a bit harder to work with. It's pretty similar to working with ironwood or ipe.

Your right, It's called Red Balau. But it was super easy to cut, plane, and sand. I thought it was going to be hard to work with, but it wasn't.
