Default Fiberglassing metal to a board?

hey so my dad came with this idea. lay down one layer of glass and then lay a steel plate. the 2 more layers of glass ontop? would it work?

it will be super heavy. steel is heavy enough, but adding 3 layers of glass along with all that resin, this board would be super heavy and stiff. i say nay

that would be very heavy. if you want to use metal and composites, you might do a stinger thing. i have been playing with the idea of a foam core V-lam, with hollow metal tubes, but the square kind in replacement for wood then a thin lexan top so it can be pressed into concave. i would need a Vacuum Bag though.

can you expand on your idea?

im really against a metal and wood board, i think it should be one of the other otherwise there is just too much weight. carbon stringers are your friend, similar tensile strength as a metals but much much lighter. however if you can find some steel stringers they could work.

but the 3 layers of glass is overkill. sand the board a bit, but a thick base layer of resin, set in the stringers, let dry, light layer of resin, set glass, more resin on top, let dry, go skate.

and you can get Carbon Tow Relatively cheap. 50 yards for $15

Carbon Fiber Fabric, Tapes & Tow - Fibre Glast Developments

go with a wood construction. you wont get the resin to bond with the metal. steel is not nearly as porous as wood, foam, and fiberglass. lol

i follow ya. heck yes it would work. you are on(to) something. the dervish had issues of stress cracks around the cut out, an insert of metal at the mounting area would of solved this. the metal serves to cap the amount of torsion at the corners of the deck. i used a thin piece (1/8")of alum. on my banana board, mounted on the bottom of course, under the trucks). that board is fortified!

mounting it to a board is much different than trying to glass it on the board like he asked.

what is the fascination with fiberglass, i have never put that junk on my car, or a skateboard. It is shite, it is poison, i wouldn't want to stand on the stuff for fear of my slip ons getting sick. I wouldn't make a skateboard with fiberglass on it or in it ever. It isn't recyclable, it's not edible! It can't stand, it can't walk, can't do nothing. drop it. then show what you have made, you be lifted, high on shoulders and applauded for your use of regional materials on world travel, universally known as a sound builder. artificial materials will always be that

u know and i know that i am not joking around about this. It is matter of principals. metal doesn't put me off, but the resins and polymers, the earth doesn't want these things around. i can eat off of my skateboards, use as a cutting board, it is all good. the finish is natural, no grip, ever. and i did 20 miles the other weekend in NYC, guess how many longboarders i seen, none. me and my banana board held the whole city down. Alright people idea change. im using 4 layers of BB. with a 2 1/2wide by 1/8 aluminum. and inlaying it where the truck mounts connect to the center platform. then glassin over the bottom. to keep that in there
First home made board. started 11/6/09 fin:11/17/09
