Other Planet Board Project.
The Objective:
A Design that is,
-Cheap.
-High(ish) quality.
-Functional.
-Minimizes waste material.
-Can go out with our trucks.
-Is modifiable, Same set of presses/Jigs can pump out different boards. ( To accomidate our ever changing truck design )
-Can be produced in quantity.
-Can be produced ( at least in part ) by people not especially skilled @ wood working.
The Design:

Specs:
10" wide, 44" long ( or shorter ), and anywhere from 5/8" thick, to a full inch.
The Plan:

How it is going to work is is going to combine multiple, Pre-manufactured components.
The Blue is the Pressed Deck surface.
The Brown is a stringer, a simple flat piece of BB.
The Orange is Additional piece of wood to make the top of the deck level, and to provide a strong union between the stringer, and the pressed deck surface, possibly temorary.
It heavily centered on Tooling, Presses, Jigs, Etc.
So what is required from the deck manufacturer is minimized.
All of the work that requires knowledge or skill goes into designing and making these tools.
For instance, The deck shape will simply be routed out on a jig.
How it can be modified:
The Press itself which make the Blue piece in the above illistration is sized and capable of making a full deck.
Its a full 44" press.

For now, And in the illistration, The stringer is just a flat piece of BB, but later that could potentially be replaced with a pressed "Drop stinger"
Pressing the stringer would also deem the orange piece unnessiary, as it could be pressed right in to the stringer.
Progress:
The press is mostly compleated.
I've currently just finished pressing a 'Test piece" out of 1/8" 'Crap ply'

They turned out BEAUTIFULLY!
So, whats next is me finishing the press. I was a little careless w/ glue while doing the test piece. I watered the glue down so as not to use as much... made it messier.
So Im going to fix that.
Then Im going to coat the press with Wax or something, so as not to have the same problem in future.
Then Im going to buy a couple sheets of 1/8" BB, and Press up a full legnth board w/o a stringer, and Im going to use that to make a jig to route out the board shape from.
And... I'll see where it goes from there.
I'll keep this thread updated w/ pics and everything.
We'll see how this project turns out.

i wouldnt water down the glue. thats one thing you dont want to skimp on. easy fix for "coating with wax" is either lay down some wax paper under the board or some plastic painters sheet.
the press looks really nice!

Re: Other Planet Board Project.
I wouldn't include that cutout on the middle of the board.
It weakens the board at the highest stress point and there is no practical reason to have it there.
Boards breh:
Comet Voodoo XL (OG shape) - 50* Calibers
Carbon Surf Finish Clutch Jailbait - Crails or Paris
Incline Fro Pick - Ace 66
Comet Shred 35 - Indy 169s
Not set up:
Galac GTCPLDP
Loaded Dervish
$70 + shipping for each?? PM me!

I only used watered down glue because... Well. the wood I was using to test was so crappy in the first place.
Of course Im not going to be doing that when Im pressing a real board.
And I've thought of wax paper, and visqueen... but that seems like such a hassle. If I could just have a permanant coating on the press that glue wouldn't stick too, I think it would be easier in the long run.

Its not entirly pointless.
Its based on the shape of my current board, and its an aspect I really like about it that I want to exaggerate in this one.
its really nice for just carrying it around, to have a kind of 'handle' right near the center.
And what I like the most about it is...
Its epic for foot braking.
Just kinda locks your ankle in place, so its really stable, and it doesn't really throw you off balance.
At the narrowest point, the deck is 6" wide. Plus a 4" stringer...
We'll have to see, but I don't think the extra stregnth will be missed.

i use a plastic painters sheet and its really not bad. i guess just get it coated with poly untill its super smooth so the glue peels off.

Re: Other Planet Board Project.
I personally think this could be much more marketable to you introduce your product (trucks) using a more moderately shaped board. While this might not appeal as much to some people, it will certainly not turn off as many.
The construction looks solid and you have some good ideas going but I would round some of the corners a bit more and just smooth and dilute that extreme groove/indent in the side of it.
You guys got a lot of fantastic concepts going on. Keep it up!

Re: Other Planet Board Project.
why not slightly modify your truck design to have conventional 4 hole connection?

Cool ####! Going into the board market? Haha...don't it sucks! I'm a custom board builder and I have less money than most hobos.

Re: Other Planet Board Project.
Jarman - No problem we have already made them fit a standard pattern so no worries
Dimm- Haha these are at most going to be for prototypes and our own amusement.
David has done some real cool stuff. I cant wait to use this press!

I used Blender.
Its normally used for 3D animating for like... Games or stuff like that.
Uses polygons.
I would have use a more 'engineer' geared program, but blender is what I know how to use.

I feel ya there, seems the problem is that for every time someone asks about buying a board i go ahead and build it, whether or not they actually want to buy it. damn...
