Due to my small dorm and a totaled old board, I made one out of oak (no room for a press =( ). Its a dervish look-alike, 41.5" L and 8.9"W with a 33" wheelbase. I made it of 1/2 solid oak cause 3/4 seemed to heavy, but its way to flexy, like i'll bottom out then crack it. I'm 150-160lbs. I was thinkin of 2 oak stringers 1/2 by 3/4 on the bottom the length of the board, or maybe a length of aluminium tubing. I'll post some pics.

You have a TON of options for a stringer material option.
I would personally stick to the wood stringers, they will be more active and responsive.
Aluminum (at least the generally available stuff) will not typically rebound very well upon being bent. Think of aluminum cans, once they are bent... they will not rebound back to their original shape. You would have to attach it VERY securely to the bottom of the board to keep it retaining its original shape.
Being in the dorms, i would say your best bet would be either a pair of stringers, or one larger stringer on the bottom surface. Just remember your truck bolt holes and shape... sometimes thats the toughest part of designing an appealing stringer.
